John Dodson was born the 17th of April 1791 in Pulaski county, Virginia. John was the son of Samuel Dodson Jr. (abt.1773-1860) and Sarah (Clontz) Dodson (1773-1830) of Pulaski County, Virginia. Sarah was born ca 1768 in Virginia. Sometime around 1805, John's family migrated to northwestern Tennessee and settled on Indian Creek in Grainger County. [1]
John traveled to Rutledge, TN in November of 1814 when he was mustered into service as a private under Captain Riches Company, Colonel Bayles Regiment and General Colter's Brigade to serve during the War of 1812. In April, 1815, John was discharged and returned home to Grainger County.

Notes
There may be duplicates, but need to verify children first and find sources for birth and death dates.
Mary, b. 1809 before his first marriage, was his younger sister, not his daughter, and has been disconnected by Halsey Bullen. Several of the other children connected here also seem not to be his children. Further research needed.
Death
On December 17, 1871, almost 20 years after their move to Oregon, John died at their homestead on Roberts Creek. He was 80-years-old and had lived to see the area transformed. At the time of his death, the Dodsons owned about 700 acres of good land consisting of their original Oregon Donation Land Claim, 160 acres John had claimed as a War of 1812 veteran, and 120 acres they had purchased in 1864. In his Will John left the estate to Hannah and $50-$100 to each of the children. [2]
