Settled in Timber Ridge, Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1774. He purchased 225 acres of land from the heirs of John Noble for one hundred pounds of currency 28 Sep 1793, see Frederick County VA Deed Book 24A pages 376-79.

Frederick County Deed Book 24A, p 376 - 28 Sept. 1793:

Between John Mason agent by virtue of a Legal Power of Attorney dated July 1790 to him by Thomas Noble heir at Law of A. Noble (Anthony Noble) to Jacob Kerns of the same County ... Consideration of one Hundred Pounds ... a certain tract of Land with its appurtenances lying and being in the Counties of Frederick and Hampshire .. on the drains of the lick run containing two Hundred and Seventy five acres conveyed to said Anthony Noble dec'd by deed from the late Proprietors Office ...

Wit John Cordell John Mason Colin Campbell Legal Attorney for Thos. Noble

He seems to be of German descent as he signed a deed book as Jacob Karnes and the clerk made a notation "in Dutch" which meant high German.

He is listed on the Frederick County Personal Property Tax List for 1787. He is listed as Jacob Karnes.
