Biography

Nathaniel "Nathan" Main(e), the sixth child of Jeremiah Main Jr. (1708-1780) and Thankful (Brown) Main (1720-1812), was born in Stonington, Connecticut [1].

Note: Considerable confusion exists regarding the identity of this person as contrasted with Nathaniel Main (1754-1855). The Brown Genealogy (1915), in a footnote on page 243 [2] corrects the previously published Genealogical Record...Simeon Main (1909) [3] which listed Nathaniel Brown, number 290, among the children of Jeremiah and Thankful (Brown) Main, who married Abigail Thurston. The correct Nathaniel Main who married Abigail Thurston was number 294, son of Timothy and Elizabeth (Brown) Main. This Nathaniel probably chose to be called Nathan in order to reduce confusion.

This Nathan Main married twice:

1) In 1776 Deborah York [15 Aug 1760 - 29 Sep 1812]; they resided in the vicinity of Petersburg, New York, where they had about 9 children. Deborah (York) Main died about 29 Sep 1812, at Petersburg.
2) In 1818 Rebecca (Chapin) Main (1794-1885) [note historical surname discrepancy as 'Chaplin' in her profile, which now is corrected]. They resided in Bloomfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.

This Nathan Main, age 94, and Rebecca, age 56, were living in Bloomfield, Crawford, Pennsylvania, USA, in 1850. Data says they were both born in Connecticut.[4]

Nathan Main(e) died 13 May 1855 in Bloomfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. His gravestone (Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Bloomfield) says he died 13 May 1855 ae 96 yrs., however his Find A Grave: Memorial #17402135 states that he was aged 98-99, thus by calculation implying a birth date in 1756 to '57. In view of the birth dates of his nearest siblings (David in 1752, Daniel in 1761), any year within that range may have been plausible.

A Pennsylvania death certificate (Concord, Erie County #116299) for Jeremiah Main, born 22 July 1833; died 1 Dec 1907, says he was the son of Nathan Main b. in Rhode Island and Rebecca Chapin b. in Massachusetts. He was buried in Bloomfield , Pennsylvania.

Corp Nathan “Nate” Maine Birth: 1756 Connecticut, USA Death: 13 May 1855 (aged 99) Bloomfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, USA Burial: Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bloomfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, USA Memorial #: 17402135

Bio: Nathan was a Revolutionary War Veteran as listed by the Pennsylvania Veteran Affairs Commission. Recognized by John Fisher, Post 337, Crawford County, PA. This Revolutionary War Emblem and flag are not recognized by DAR/SAR and predates their existence by about five years. Proof is the flag and sign posted beside the stone. (Mount Pleasant Cemetery is located at 38101 Mount Pleasant Rd., and the corner of Wilson Rd., Union city, PA 16438. In the Northeast side of Crawford County PA, on the southwest corner of the homestead his son Moses Maine owned. His wife is buried with him. Her stone reads "Rabbecca" Main. Note the name difference. The 1850 census says that Nathan was 94 years of age. This means that when he died in 1855 he was 99, born in 1756.

The stone replacement was wrong. The Revolutionary War emblem was placed on his memorial five years before the Daughters of The American Revolution was formed. It was placed there because Nathan survived until 1855, and the members of the John Fisher Post GAR knew him personally. He had told them of his service in the War. (I had a running argument with the Crawford County GAR rep, as she just could not comprehend why the memorial was placed.)

Inscription: The Marker says Revolutionary War. It has 13 stars around the base and a Revolutionary War Soldier in uniform. It is attached to an American flag. Though not recognized by DAR/ SAR, Nathan's service was recognized by John Fisher Post 337 Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Crawford County, PA. The emblem and recognition predates DAR/SAR by more then three years. Mrs. Ann Marie Cox (?-2011) who used to own the farm Nathan is buried in was the treasure of the cemetery since 1945 and mother-in-law to one of Nathan's GGGGrand daughters through Moses Maine, his first son from his second marriage.

If anyone has a solid link to Nathan, the Connecticut Sons of the Revolution said they would recognize him. For more info contact me via the EDIT button on this web link. [wanttopreach <wanttopreach@gmail.com]

I think it might be a good idea for the profile managers to re-examine the information for this Nathan. According to Genealogical Record of Nathaniel Babcock, Simeon Main, Isaac Miner, Ezekiel Main pg 119, #290 at https://archive.org/details/genealogicalreco1909brow/page/118 He is attached to wives he wasn't married to, He was born 12 Jul 1754, if he is attached to the correct parents. Or he's attached to the wrong parents. It's impossible to fix Deborah (York) Main at this point because it appears all of the connections are messed up some how. Sorry I didn't look at Nathan more closely before. From the History of Stonington I would guess he's attached to the wrong wives when putting the two references together. None of the Ancestry.com links work so they are totally useless.

Main-826 and Main-223 appear to represent the same person because: These are clearly the same man, although there are some discrepancies. Nathan's birthdate was not legible in the records and the only evidence I've seen is his gravestone that says he was born about 1759 and the 1850 census that says he was born about 1756. The specific date 12 July belongs to a different Nathan. As for the death, Use the date on the stone, it is consistent with what else we know.

Could Nathan Main [Main-826] be a match for Main -223 or any of those others who have posted similar queries? Stonington, CT or Westerly, RI (nextdoor) were the points of departure for many who ended up in Rensselaer Co., NY (near Albany). The dates are very close.

Main-235 and Main-223 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth year and place, same parents, same siblings, same death date and place.
