Biography

Effingham Lawrence Capron was born on March 29, 1791. His parents were John Capron (1757 - 1836) and Asenath (Cargill) Capron (1764 - 1810).^[1] He was born in Pomfret, Windham County Massachusetts and his birth registered in Uxbridge, Worchester, Massachusetts,^[2]

Capron was born into a notable progressive town and county in that it voted in its first woman onto the town council in 1856. Only 6 years after he was born, there were 13 district school houses .^[3]

An Effingham Capron junior is recorded as living in Uxbridge, Worcester in the 1820 Census^[4] and in the 1830 census as Effingham L Capron.^[5]

Effingham married Lydia Allen (1805 - 1856) on May 5, 1831. ^[6]

Effingham and His wife Lydia are enumerated in the Massachusetts State Census in 1855 in Worchester his age was given as 64. ^[7]

During his life Effingham was an member of the anti-slavery movemnt and considered one of their local leaders who was active within the underground railway. He is a signatory on the 'Declaration of the Anti-Slavery Convention' Dec 4, 1833^[8]

Effingham died on September 16, 1859 aged 68 of Typhoid Fever in Providence, Providence, Rhode Island ^[9]. Effingham was buried in Prospect Hill Cemetary, Uxbridge, Massachusetts.^[10]
