Biography

Stephen Jenks was born at Sackville, New Brunswick, 9 Oct 1775, the son of Simeon Jenks and Sarah Maxwell, [1] [2] and stepson of Ann Maria Nutting; [3] died at Lyons, New York (FindAGrave) or Sodus, New York, [3] 8 Jan 1850, aged "73y 2m 29d" (gravestone), and is buried in the Brick Church Cemetery, Sodus, New York. [4]

From his profile in Genealogy of the Jenks Family: [3]

He married Mary Reynolds, daughter of Thomas Reynolds, born 1785 and died May 3, 1865, ae. 80.

Comparing the birth dates of the children makes it almost certain that Mary was his second wife. According to descendants, he was born in Nova Scotia, and it is certain that Simeon (138) had a son Stephen. The family listed below is as complete as deed references afford; but this line is disputed by some members of the family.

  1. Stephen, b. abt. 1798.
  2. Simeon, b. Sept. 26, 1800.
  3. Thomas R., b. 1802.
  4. John, b. abt. 1804.
  5. George W., b. 1827; called younger son of Mary.

Research Notes

Descendants of this family have not been traced. In the New Brunswick 1851 census, there was one family in Sackville Parish, consisting of John, 33, Emily A, 31 and Emily 4. They were the only Jenks in the province. NB Vital Records have no Jenks activity until 46 when Harold Jenks from Parsboro died in Moncton.

Joe, prior to 1784, the Township of Sackville was part of Nova Scotia. In fact, Cumberland County included the eastern half of what is now New Brunswick. It has nothing to do with the communities near Halifax except for the similarities in name. I'm putting this back to the way it was.

Jenks-311 and Jenks-1253 appear to represent the same person because: This appears to be the same person. The Sackville Township Book documents his birth. The Find-A-Grave confirms his birth location. (Sackville was in Nova Scotia in 1775/6) Birthdates are close. The existing mother would have been 15 at his birth so is more likely to be the second wife and step mother to the individual.

Jenks-1077 and Jenks-311 appear to represent the same person because: All information is the same. Father's name different because of a typo....
