Biography

Sir Alexander Abercromby, 1st Baronet

  • From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sir Alexander Abercromby of Birkenbog, 1st Baronet (c. 1603 – December 1684)[1] was a Scottish politician.

He was the oldest son of Alexander Abercromby of Birkenbog and his wife Elizabeth Bethune, daughter of David Bethune.[2]

On the 20th of February 1636, he was created a Baronet, of Birkenbog, in the County of Banff.[3] Abercromby entered the Parliament of Scotland in 1640, sitting for Banffshire until the following year.[4] He represented the constituency also in 1643 and after a break of three years, he was returned for it in 1646, a seat he held for the next two years.[4] In 1661, he was again successful for Banffshire until 1663.[4] Abercromby was a Covenanter and in 1645 took part at the Battle of Auldearn under command of John Hurry.[5]

He married firstly Jane Urquhart, daughter of Sir Thomas Urquhart, marriage contract dated 28 September 1628.[1]and had by her a son and three daughters.[6] and by him had the following children:

  1. Alexander Abercromby, died young.[1]
  2. Mary Abercromby, married Sir John Gordon of Park (mct 23 Aug 1661).[1]
  3. Violet Abercromby, married John Kinnnaird, second son of Walter Kinnaird of Culbin, mct 18 Feb 1664).[1]
  4. Christian Abercromby, married James Fraser, son of Alexander Fraser.[1]

After her death, Abercromby remarried Jane Sutherland, daughter of Sutherland of Kinminity.[6][2] by who he had a daughter;

  1. Agnes Abercromby, married Robert Bisset, eldest son and heir of Alexander Bisset of Lessindrum (mct 6 June 1681).[2]

On the 22nd of August 1668 he married thirdly Elizabeth Baird, daughter of Sir James Baird of Auchmeddan.[6] Abercromby had three sons and a daughter by his third wife.[6] (She survived him and married thirdly, Patrick Ogilvy of Lonmay and Inchmartin, by whom she had further issue).[2]

  1. Sir James Abercromby, 2nd Baronet of Birkenbog.[2]
  2. Alexander Abercromby of Tullibody.[2]
  1. Patrick Abercromby, apprenticed to James Nicolson of Traboun, Merchant in Edinburgh, 6 Jun 1694.[2]

Death

He died in December 1684,[2] and was succeeded in the baronetcy by his second and oldest surviving son James.[5] His third son Alexander was also a Member of Parliament and ancestor of the Barons Abercromby.[7]

Research Notes

  • Wikidata states birth to be 1610's which throws error. Research needed.
  • I note a reference in the footnotes of History of the Family of Urquhart by Hetty Tayler, pg 61, which refers to his three wives and says the Abercrombie's were invested in family estates in 1629, and says his third wife was the mother of his sons. These references deserve further research, as the son born to Jean Urquhart probably died young and the estates invested possibly give a clue to his first marriage date.
  • Alexander was born about 1607.

Abercrombie-909 and Abercrombie-47 appear to represent the same person because: They both have a similar birth date and both have the same spouse as in Jean Urquhart. I have merged both duplicates of Jean/Jane. I discovered them both and adopted them both to merge them.
