Biography

Peter Smith Bean was born March 23, 1824, in Bethel, Oxford Co., Maine, the son of Daniel Bean and Betsy Smith Bean. He came to Cold Spring, Wisconsin, in 1846, engaging in the manufacture of windows and rush bottom chairs.

On October 15, 1849, in Jackson, Wisconsin, Peter married Miss Eliza Carter, a school teacher at Cold Spring. [1] She was born June 20, 1827 in Farmersville, Cattaragus Co., N.Y., (date of birth from headstone) and was the daughter of the pastor of that place, Rev. Ashbal Carter. Her mother's maiden name was Nellie Cronkhite. Peter and Eliza are found on the United States Census of 1850, living in Cold Spring, Jefferson county, Wisconsin. Both are listed as 25 years of age and born in Maine. In truth, Eliza was three years younger than Peter. [2]

36 year old Peter S. Bean and 33 year old Eliza are found on the U.S. Census of 1860, living in Fremont Township, Winnesheik county, Iowa with children, Edwin, Clarinda, Luella, Mary [actually Marion] and Charles. On this census, Eliza is listed as having been born in New York. She was born in Farmersville, Cattaraugus County, New York. [3]

On October 2, 1862 Mr. Bean enlisted in Co. D, 6th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry, and went into camp at Davenport, Iowa, November 1, 1862. The 6th Cavalry was ordered to Fort Randall, Dakota Territory in March 1863, and from there went on expeditions, as needed.[4] On September 3rd, he was with General Sully's charge on the Indians at Stone Hill, Dakota Territory. Was sent up the Missouri River to join General Sibley of Minnesota, at Apple River, but was taken sick, and was left at Fort Rice, later was returned to Fort Randall and was discharged in April 1865 by sergeon's [sic] certificate of disability.

Peter S. Bean and Eliza are found on the U.S. Census of 1870, living in Fremont Township, Winnesheik county, Iowa with children, Edwin, Clarinda, Luella, Marion [still marked as a female because of the name, but is male] Charles, Nellie, Peter, Willie S. Bean and Wallace E. Bean. Peter and Eliza and family are found on the 1880 Census, living in Lafayette, Monroe county, Wisconsin, with only Charles and Wallace living at home. [5]

In June, 1881 Mr. and Mrs Bean came to Cadott where they resided until 1895, having lived in the following named places: Cold Spring, Wis; Burr Oak, N.Y.; Plymouth Rock, Iowa; Cataract, Wis. Nine children were born to them of whom six are living, one E.C. Bean here in Cadott, the rest widely separated, all are married. There are twenty-six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. On the 1900 Census, Peter and Eliza were living in the Wisconsin Veterans Home, in Waupaca, Wisconsin. Peter's birth was recorded as March, 1824, and he was listed as 76 years of age. [7] The two of them lived at the home during the cold winter months and returned to the farm each summer. [8] The 1905 census must have been taken during a warmer month, since Peter and Eliza are living at home in Cadott. His year of birth is listed as "Abt 1818" and his age is given as 87, when he was actually 81 years old. Eliza is listed as 77 years old. [9] On the 1910 census, Peter's age is listed as 85. He and Eliza are living in Cadott. [10]

Peter Smith Bean died October 10, 1911, in the Wisconsin Veterans Home, N2665 County Rd QQ, Waupaca, WI 54981, at the age of 87 years, and is buried in the Brooklawn Cemetery, in Cadott, Chippewa county, Wisconsin. [11]
