Kean Mahany was born in Blennerville, he was trained as an artist in Florence and France. He immigrated to Buffalo in 1841, marrying Katharine Reynolds in Rochester in 1842 . They moved to Niagara Falls, NY where they had some children, then transferred to Buffalo, NY where he lived on Carroll Street. They had ten children but only five lived to adulthood. [1]. This branch of the Mahony family from Blennerville changed the spelling of their surname from O'Mahony or Mahony to Mahany in America. The spelling probably began with his son, Rowland Blennerhassett Mahany, who was a prominent member in politics. His other son, John George Mahony, of Cleveland as well as his daughters used the "Mahany" spelling as well.
Kean worked as a painter, a grainer and an artist. He must have done local portrait paintings as well as is described in this article about his work.
