Abner enlisted during the War of 1812, serving as a Private in Captain Williams' company of the Massachusetts Militia, with militia service including June 20 to June 22, 1811 (W.O. #22719) and September 11 through October 4, 1814 (W.O. #27323.)[2]
Abner married Mahala (Marshall, marrying in Wiscasset, Maine on November 26, 1816[3] and making their home in Woolwich, Maine.[4] They had ten known children together:

By 1830, they lived in Washington, Maine, in Lincoln County.[5] Widowed in 1840 after his wife's death at the age of 47, Abner lived with his children in Putnam, Maine.[6] remarried, marrying Priscilla (Speed) Bailey, the daughter of Benjamin Speed and Priscilla Hart, marrying in Washington, Maine on February 3, 1841[7] and having ten known children together:

They made their home in Washington, Maine, farming.[8][9] By 1870, Abner and his family had moved west, taking up residence in Libertyville, Illinois, where Abner, at the age of 74, worked on a farm.[10]
Abner Bailey passed away at the age of 75 and is buried at Lakeside Cemetery in Libertyville, Illinois.[11]
