Biography

Descendant of Charles the Great, Charlemagne, Patricius Romanorum.

Ruth Thorndike was born in Beverly, Essex, Massachusetts on July 13 1725. She was the daughter of Robert Thorndike and Elizabeth (Woodbury) Thorndike.^[1][2] She moved with her parents to Falmouth, Cumberland, Maine in 1732 or 1733. They lived at Purpooduck on the south side of the Fore River in what is now Cape Elizabeth.^[3]

Ruth married Samuel Cates in the First Church of Falmouth in 1749.^[4][5] Samuel and Ruth sold their remaining Falmouth land in 1763 and likely moved to Plantation No. 5 on the Narraguagus River - now Harrington, Washington Maine - in 1763 or 1764.^[6] Her date of death is not documented, but is often given in online sources as 1767.^[7]

Samuel Cates and Ruth (Thorndike) Cates had eight known children:^[8]
