Biography

1776 Project
Captain Jonathan Carriel served with Worcester County Militia, Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
Jonathan Carriel is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A019670.

Jonathan was born 28 May 1734, the son of Samuel Carriel and Rebecca Elliot. [1] [2] [3] [4]

On 25 November 1756, Jonathan married Elizabeth Greenwood and they resided in Sutton, where Jonathan was a farmer. They were the parents of children: Jonathan, Peter, David, Elizabeth, Huldah, Mary, Lydia, Sarah, Anne and Nathan. [3] [1]

Jonathan served in the Revolutionary War as a Lieutenant with Capt. Arthur Dagget's Company, Col. Ebenezer Leaned's Regiment. He was on the muster roll dated August 1, 1775; enlisted April 24, 1775; service 3 months and two weeks and one day. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]

He also served in Capt. Dagget's company, col. Learned's regiment; company return dated Roxbury Camp, October 6, 1775; reported as having command of Capt. Dagget's Company; Also, Captain Col. Josiah Whitney's Regiment; list of officer; commissioned February 21, 1776; also, same regiment; service from April 11, 1776 (four days before marching) to August 1, 1776. Additional service was given August 10 through November 27, 1776. [5] [6] [8] [9]

On March 3, 1777, Capt. Jonathan Carriel, Capt. Bartholomew Woodbury, Lieut. Enoch Marble, Lieut. March Chase, Mr. Jonas Bond, Lieut. David Holman, and Capt. Elisha Goddard were chosen as the committee of Correspondence, Inspection, and Safety for that year. It was voted that "the sum of twenty-five pounds be paid by the town to every soldier of this town, that has or shall enlist to go into the Continental army, then being raised, until the town's quota for said army be completed, provided he has not received equivalent in some other way." [10]

In the Greenwood Genealogy, as well as in the Sutton Town records, Jonathan is referred to as "Captain Jonathan Carriel."[11]

Jonathan died 1817 at Sutton at the age of 82.[12]

The gravestone of Jonathan Carriel's wife, Elizabeth (Greenwood) Carriel, is still readable, and provides further documentation that her husband was Captain Jonathan Carriell. The inscription reads: "Memento mori. Mrs. Elizabeth Carriell, wife of Capt. Jonathan Carriell, formerly of Sutton, who died January 9th 1781 in ye 44th year of her age."[13]

Note on Military Service: One or two websites, including the Maine Society Sons of the American Revolution, list Jonathan Carriel, Jr. as a solder of the Revolutionary War. This is incorrect. It was his father, Captain Jonathan Carriel who served in this capacity. In the Sutton Town Records, the father is referred to as "Captain Jonathan Carriel." In the Groton Town Records, Jonathan Jr.'s marriage to Sybele Stone refers to Jonathan as "Jonathan Carriel , Jr." to differentiate him from his father who was known as Captain Jonathan Carriel. The gravestone of Elizabeth Greenwood Carriel, wife to Jonathan Carriel, Sr. and mother of Jonathan Carriel, Jr., is inscribed "wife of Captain Jonathan Carriel, formerly of Sutton." The approved DAR lineages list Jonathan Carriel, Sr. as the Revolutionary War soldier.
