Biography

Vera Victoria Mobley was born to Alexander Franklin Mobley III (1863-1935) and Enthy Cardelia Crews (1870-1934) on 21 Mar 1904 in Antoine, Clark, Arkansas. As a young girl the family lived in Justice Precinct 3, McLennan, Texas (1910 Census). By 1920 the family had returned to Clark County, Arkansas and lived in Anderson (1920 Census). Shortly after, she and some girl friends moved to Chicago, Illinois for a chance at a better life, as her father was a sharecropper.

On 14 February, 1925 she married Merrill Brayton Brown in Chicago. They had two children Benjamin Franklin BROWN (1925-2011) and Mary Jane Brown (1931- ) both born in the Chicago area.

She and Merrill lived in Virginia and Florida and by 1958 they were living in Hot Springs, Garland, Arkansas. Merrill died in 1963 and she then married Louis Goodwin. After Louis died and being in poor health, her son Ben moved her to be near him in Wilmington, Delaware where she lived in Ingleside until her death on 14 June 1977. Her body was transported back to Hot Springs for burial next to Merrill in Greenlawn Cemetery.
