Biography

Esther Pritchard, daughter of William Pritchard & Hannah (Unknown)[1]; married 6 Sep. 1677, Westfield, Massachusetts, John Hanchett; son of Thomas Hanchett & Deliverance Langton;[2] [1] They had eight children.[1]

Deacon John Hanchett was born 1 Sep. 1649, Wethersfield, Connecticut; died 22 Oct, 1744, Suffield, Connecticut, age 95 years.

Esther (Pritchard) Hanchett died 29 Nov. 1711, Suffield, Connecticut.[2][1]

Esther Prichard was born 1656 in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts.[3][4] She was the daughter of William Pritchard.[3][4][5]

Esther Prichard died November 29, 1711, in Suffield a few days after the birth of her child, Ebenezer, who appears to have died at birth.[6]

Duplicate - Different Parents

This profile is likely a duplicate of Esther Pritchard, which has Nathaniel Pritchard as the father. This relationship appears in a number of family trees on the web but has not been confirmed by any reliable source.

Some believe that Hannah Langton was the mother of Esther, but the only evidence appears to be that a William Pritchard married a Hannah (see William's profile). Hannah Langton appears to have married Nathaniel Pritchard not William, as many have entered in their trees. It seems highly unlikely that Hannah Langton was married to William Prichard.

Some even say that Esther was born in Ipswich, where William clearly lived for a time and had other children, but that her father was Nathaniel. Nathaniel is not known to have been in Ipswich.

The Find-A-Grave entry for Nathaniel Pritchard does not list any children of Nathaniel and Hannah Langton.[7]

After the siege of Brookfield, many of the residents left Brookfield and relocated in Suffield, where Esther and many others of William Pritchard's family died. Nathaniel, however, was born and died in New Haven (although he appears to have married Hannah Langton in Springfield - if that record is for the New Haven Nathaniel Pritchard).

I'm setting up a merge for Prichard-150 into Pritchard-691, but William is the correct father, and the mother, Hannah, is Unknown, not Langton.

Please disconnect Esther Pritchard-691 from Nathaniel and Hannah as parents BEFORE the merge so the merge can go through correctly. thank you.

PS This is a pretty little problem -- the correct surname spelling for this family is preferred to be Pritchard, but the father with that spelling, Nathaniel, is the wrong father. So if we disconnect Esther from her parents, and then merge Prichard-150 into Pritchard-691, we will have the 'best of both worlds'.

Prichard-150 and Pritchard-691 appear to represent the same person because: See the Comment on Pritchard-150. See TAG 38 on this family, pages 131 and 134-5. Please do not reject the merge again. Please message me if questions. William is the correct father, but Pritchard is the preferred spelling for this family. Esther needs to be disconnected from Nathaniel and Hannah Langton Pritchard BEFORE the merge -- they were not her parents.
The best source for this person and their family is in TAG Vol 38 (1962), pp 129.

Erin Cole has done a great job of figuring out the facts for this family, and TAG 38 completes the work.

Sgt William Pritchard married Hannah (Unknown), who was the mother of all his children.

The family of Roger Pritchard (see TAG Vol 44:193) of Wethersfield, Springfield and Milford, has frequently been conflated with the family of William Pritchard of Ipswich and Brookfield.

Roger's son Nathaniel, who married Hannah Langton, has been conflated with Sgt William who married Hannah (last name unknown).

As Erin said, this is indeed a duplicate of Pritchard-691, and the correct father is William. I'm reactivating the proposed merge. Please help this complete, and message me if questions. thank you.

Jonathan, Merry, William, and Minna:

I would like to have the agreement of the profile managers to disconnect Esther Prtichard from Nathaniel and Hannah (Langton) Pritchard as their daughter.

TAG Vol 38 (1962) shows the family of Sgt William Pritchard of Ipswich, and Esther, his daughter, who married John Hanchett 6 Sept 1677 in Westfield, and died 29 Nov 1711. (page 134).

The Pritchard family of Sgt William has in a few places been conflated with the Pritchard family of Roger of New Haven (TAG 44:193).

Esther's brother Joseph also needs to be disconnected from Hannah Langton.

Please message with any concerns, and/or post your agreement/disagreement.

Pritchett-541 and Pritchard-691 appear to represent the same person because: same spouse

The only reason they have different fathers is that Nathaniel is not the father of Esther. Have you reviewed these profiles in detail? Do you have evidence of Nathaniel being Esther's father?

The first source listed (Suffield Historical Society) gives Esther's father as William Pritchard (not Nathaniel). Is there a source for Nathaniel? I have not confirmed the accuracy of the Suffield Historical Society claim, but my prior research also had William. I would be inclined to follow this source unless other sources can be cited to contradict.

The Pritchard.htm only uses Pritchett for Esther, and the Hanchett.htm uses Pritchard. Seems like leaving Pritchard is best unless a very compelling case could be made.
