Biography

They had 5 children, Priscilla, Dorcas, Nathan, Benjamin and John.

Benjamin's 2nd, 3rd and 4th wives are listed with him in the marriage records of Smithfield, showing that they were married in the Puritan church there. Benjamin and Elizabeth, his first wife, were married in the Friends church in Smithfield. This suggests that the Owens family was Quaker (Friends).

Some secondary sources do list Elizabeth as the daughter of Josiah Owen. But there have been disputes over who her parents were. Here's how it was resolved:

1. In her marriage record, Elizabeth is said to come from Providence. There were very few people with the last name Owen in the 1700's in Providence.

2. Also in her marriage record, Elizabeth's father is listed as being Josiah. there were 2 men named Josiah Owens in Providence in the early 1700's - an uncle and nephew.

3. There is a lack of birth / baptism records for most members of the family. Both Josiahs are known to have been Friends (Quakers), explaining the lack of records.

4. Josiah Owen the uncle and Hannah Belcher moved from Braintree to Providence sometime before 1695. They had a daughter Marjory in Braintree in 1694 and a son John in Providence in 1703. Other children would have been born between those years. Josiah Owen Junior (the nephew) and Mary Estance would have been married around 1706.

5. Elizabeth was married in 1719. She could have been born as early as 1703, making her 16 at marriage, but she was likely born at least 2 or 3 years before that. This would put her birth in range of years Josiah Owen and Hannah Belcher had children. Thus it would make the most sense that they were her parents. In this case, Elizabeth would have been named after her father's mother instead of her great grandmother.

Five children are listed to Benjamin Pain and Elizabeth, 1st wife, in the Smithfield records between 1722 and 1730, showing that they joined the Puritan church by 1722. They may have had more children born Quakers before 1722, but it's doubtful. They probably would have been baptized in the Puritan church in 1722.

Over the past few days I did some research on who Elizabeth's parents would have been. The discovery of her marriage record changes a few things. I came to the conclusion they would have been Josiah Owen and Hannah Belcher. See Owen-11663. Please let me know if you agree or not that her parents should be changed to Josiah and Hannah. I am happy to change them if you feel comfortable with it.

I think you are correct in some respect. Go to this link and it lists Elizabeth parents and the persons she married. Samuel Thrall and Samuel Case. https://archive.org/stream/descendantsofjoh00owen#page/23/mode/1up

I did find that a Benjamin Paine married Elizabeth Copeland, May 1725. P: Thomas & Mary Copeland in The Family Memorial (Pt 1) by Elisah Thayer 1835. Am following this lead and 2 others.

As much as I'd like to say we have Elizabeth Owen's parents, any definite connection seems to elude us. Josiah Owen (born either 1681 or 1687) and Mary Esten / Estance who came to Providence, RI from Braintree, MA, are normally listed as her parents, such as in findagrave.com. Their oldest attested child was born in 1707, and they usually are said to have been married around 1706. Elizabeth being married in 1719 would probably have been born around 1700, when this Josiah was about 13. There was another Josiah Owens, married to Mary Osborn, who had an Elizabeth in 1674 (often listed as our Elizabeth's birth date). This Elizabeth married Samuel Thrush in 1706 and Samuel Case in 1723, both in Hartford, CT. I doubt she's our Elizabeth. His son Josiah also remained in Hartford.
