Excerpts from a letter to Mary from son Fredrick:
San Benito Texas
May 8 1921
Sunday Afternoon
My Dear Mother,
This is “Mother’s Day” and I will try to write you a line or so. I have been threatening to write to you for two weeks but I have been so busy and I can’t see at night and the mosquitoes are so bad I don’t read nor write at night.
the letter continues...
I really hope you are doing well and enjoying the best of health; for I went to church yesterday morning and at the door they were pinning flowers on the people. The lady asked me if I wanted a red one or a white one. I sized them up and told her I would take a white one, so she pinned it on and I proceeded on up to the choir <to be conspicuous> and about half thru the sermon the preacher said the red flower was for the living and the white flower was for the dead. Well, I couldn’t reach up and take her off before them all, so I just sat it out wearing a white flower for my dead Mother – After it was over I went to Mrs. Robertson and told her I had made an awful mistake, that my Mother was not dead She said I was as bad as her husband. Her daughter who is away at school sent her a bouquet of red roses and he wanted to know why she did not send white ones. She said “Well, I’m not dead yet!”
in conclusion:
Well I must quit- write real soon so I will know which color of flower to wear next time –
Love to all
