Biography

Bertha Louisa Smith, daughter of Rufus and Phebe Jane (Schoonover) Smith, was born in Dec. 1868 at Rockland, Sullivan Co., New York, USA.^[1] Her father died before 1870 and she and her mother appeared on the census of 29 Aug. 1870 in the household of her grandparents, Daniel Schoonover and Rosetta (Walton) Schoonover, at Tuscarora, Steuben Co., New York.^[2] She appeared on the census of 29 June 1880 in the household of her step-father, Charles H. Wright and mother, at Addison, Steuben Co., New York. ^[3]

She married Asa Witter Brigham, son of James E. Brigham and Elizabeth (--?--), circa 1887.^[1]

She and Asa appeared on the census of 14 June 1900 at West Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts.^[4]

Bertha died on 19 Nov. 1907 at West Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, at age 38.^[1] Her aunt, Mary Jane (Griffin) Smith wrote about her death:

19 Jan. 1908

"Your uncle Rufus's daughter Bertah Brigharn was dead. I think she lived in Mass. She died very suddenly of heart disease. Her husband got up at 4:30 and went to his work. Her boy Fred heard her hollar and got up and built a fire and read till daylight when his little 4 year old brother went in to waken her and she was dead."^[5]

She was buried at Pine Grove Cemetery, West Brookfield, Massachusetts. Her memorial has a photo of her headstone shared with Asa.^[6]
