George (Boyle) Boyle Fourth Earl of Glasgow GCH FRS is a member of Clan Boyle.

George Boyle was a member of the aristocracy in Scotland.

George Boyle GCH FRS, 4th Earl of Glasgow, was born on 18 September 1765, son of John Boyle, 3rd Earl of Glasgow, and Elizabeth Ross , daughter of George Ross, 13th Lord Ross of Halkhead. ^[1]

George, being the son of an Earl, was styled Lord Boyle in his early years, he was known as Lord Boyle until 1775 when he inherited his father's titles^[1], making him, primarily, the 4th Earl of Glasgow

George married Augusta Hay, the daughter of James (Boyd) Hay Fifteenth Earl of Erroll and Countess Isabella (Carr) Hay, on 18 March 1788 in Abbey, Renfrewshire, Scotland.^[1][2] They had six children:

• John Boyle, Viscount Kelburn, styled Lord Boyle, RN was baptised in Abbey, Renfrewshire, Scotland.^[1][3][4]
• Lady Isabella Margaret Boyle was born on 7 July 1790 in Abbey, Renfrewshire, Scotland.^[1][5]
• Hon. James Boyle was born on 10 April 1792 in Abbey, Renfrewshire, Scotland.^{[1][6][7][8][9][10]}
• Lady Elizabeth Boyle was born on 20 March 1794 in Abbey, Renfrewshire, Scotland.^[1][11][12]. Elizabeth Boyle was baptised on 22 April 1794 in Middlesex, England.^{[13][14][15][16]}
• Lady Augusta Boyle was born on 14 August 1801 in Abbey, Renfrewshire, Scotland.^[1][17][18]. Augusta Boyle was baptised on 18 August 1801 in Petersham, Surrey, England.^[19][20][21]

After the death of of Augusta Hay, George (58) married Julia Sinclair the 3rd daughter of Sir John (Sinclair) Sinclair of Ulbster 1st Bt and Diana Jane Elizabeth (MacDonald) Sinclair) on 13 November 1824, in Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom, ^[1][22][23]

They had two children:

• Hon. George Frederick Boyle , later 6th Earl of Glasgow ^[1]
• Lady Diana (Boyle) Pakington, ^[1][24], Diana married John Packington, 2nd Baron Hampton.

On his death on the 3rd July 1843^[1], George, Earl of Glasgow's titles passed to his eldest son, James, by his first wife Augusta Hay. George was interned in the Ross Vault of Renfrew Parish Church in 1843 ^[1]

Career

In 1788, Boyle; George (1765 - 1843); 4th Earl of Glasgow was elected into the Fellowship of the Royal Society, The Royal Society; Date of election to the Fellowship of the Royal Society : 05/06/1788

George was a Tory Scottish representative peer from 1790 to 1815, ^[1]

From 1810 to 1820, George was Lord Lieutenant of Renfrewshire. ^[1]

George was created Baron Ross of Hawkhead in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1815 ^[1] this gave him a seat in the House of Lords. He had acceded to the title of Baron Ross via his mother Elizabeth Ross. Elizabeth was a sister of the last male Ross of her families line, William (14th) Lord Ross. Following the death in 1754 of her brother William, the Halkhead estates devolved upon his sisters and passed, via Elizabeth, eventually into the family of the Earls of Glasgow. The title became extinct on the death of the 6th Earl of Glasgow, George Frederick Boyle (1825-1890), George's younger son, in 1890

From 1817 to 1819 George was the elected (Lord) Rector of the University of Glasgow. ^[1]

From 1820 to 1842 he was Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire. ^[1]

In 1830 he was appointed a GCH (Knights Grand Cross) of the Royal Guelphic Order ^[1]

Research Notes

Birth/Baptism: initial research suggests that George was baptised in about March 1766 in Surrey (London) England, but no sources can be found for this. it would not be unusual for a "notable" to have been born in Scotland but baptised in London so the place of birth is unconfirmed, but all sources say he is a native of Scotland.

Death: same as birth, cannot find a place of death, it could have been London, the Scots Peerage source says that he is buried in Renfrewshire. Darragh-241 09:00, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
