Stephen was born Nov, 1778[1] in[2] (prob) Harpswell, Maine, the son[3] of Samuel Veazie, Jr., of Islesboro and Phebe Holbrook.
A marriage bann dated 4 Apr, 1799[5] or 1800[6] was published for Stephen Veazie of Islesboro (AKA Long Island) and Patty Harding of Trenton. Stephen's wife is also listed[7] as "Patty", which may not be an unusual nickname for Martha.
In 1800, Stephen Veazie, having emigrated from "Harpswell", was a resident[8] of Deer Isle (AKA Islesboro), Maine, with just himself and (his new bride) a female in the household. Stephen may be the "Stephen Phesey" in Greene Plantation, Maine, in 1810[9] as the birthdates ranges for the family are approximately correct. Further, Stephen Veazie “of Belmont” Maine sold land there[10] 2 Jan 1818, perhaps anticipating or following his move to Corinna, Maine. The town of Belmont was also known[11] as Green Plantation.
Farrow and Bangor Hist Magazine, possibly from the same original source (unknown) say Stephen "moved to Corinth(sic)." Though unlikely, he may have moved to Corinth, Maine, north of Bangor and not a great distance from Trenton or Islesboro. However, that mention is likely a mistransciption of Corinna, as Corinna town records[12] cite Stephen Veazie and other members of his family several times. Farrow has Stephen "school committee [Islesboro] in 1808."
He is almost certainly the Stephen "Vesey," residing[13] in Corinna, Maine, in 1820, as the number and ages of the entries correspond to Stephen, wife Patty, and their children. Note: dau Mary Jane was born in October, 1820, and it is assumed the census was enumerated prior to that date.
Stephen and son Isaac "Veasie" resided[14] in Corinna, Maine, in 1830. Between those two census entries, the number and ages indicated correspond to Stephen, wife Patty, their children (including Isaac then head of his own household), Isaac's wife, and Isaac's daughter.
Stephen is likely the 60-70 year old male in the household of Dominicus Sewell (his son-in-law) in Corinna in 1840, as he resided[15] with son-in-law Dominicus Sewell in 1855. He does not otherwise seem to appear in the 1840 or 1850 census records.
Patty/Martha died[16] Mar 7, 1839. Between 1851 and 1852, Stephen, his sons Laban, Stephen Jr, and Alden and their families, and his daughters Martha H and Mary J and their families, all emigrated from Corinna to Caton, NY, where they took up farming. In 1855, Stephen Veazie, age 77, "father-in-law," resided[17] in the household of Dominicus Sewell and his wife Martha H, Stephen's daughter[18].
Stephen died[19] in (prob) Caton and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery there. Bruce Veazie viewed his headstone in 2005 the inscription of his deathdate and age at death were clear.
Corroboration of the Harding name: in a telephone conversation between Alvin John Veazie of Utah and Bruce J Veazie in Oct 2008, Alvin stated that his own middle name was John, his father's middle name was Harding and his grandfather's middle name was Reynolds. In addition, a legal notice[20] has, with regard to the estate of Alvin H Veazie: "also known as ALVIN HARDING VEAZIE." This supports the assumption that Martha, wife of Stephen, is Patty Harding of Trenton.
