Biography

Asa Cobb was born 24 Mar 1750, in Pawling, Dutchess, New York, United States. He died 24 Mar 1808, at Mt Cobb, Luzerne, Pennsylvania, at age 57.

From "Contributions to the History of the Lackawanna Valley" by Horace Hollister: "Although Jefferson township [Luzerne County, PA], was only formed in 1836, its settlement dates back to 1784, when Asa Cobb, taking advantage of this repose, chose a point for the location of his clearing and cabin at the foot of one of the larger and steepest elevations, now called Cobb's Mountain, as it slopes down to the old Connecticut road which passes over this high and red-stoned region. This was the primitive structure here in this township and the present residence of his great-grandson Asa Cobb now indicates its former location. For a long period of years, between the single house in Dunmore and the clearing at Little Meadows in Wayne county, this was the only intervening dwelling."
