Research Notes

1. Birth date and place. David Tranbarger appears in the U.S. census in the years 1810,[1] 1820,[2] 1830,[3] and 1840.[4] Each of these provides a range of possible birth dates for David. These are plotted below.
From this data it is seen that David Tranbarger was born between the 5 Jun 1775 and 31 May 1780.
The only other information that is available suggests that David was born on 9th of November 1781 in Littlestown, Union Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. This birth date is associated with records from Christ Reformed Church and with the name Johan Jacob Thronburg. The source given is Ancestry and cannot be found.[9]
Adams County, Pennsylvania, as is suggested in Source S3[9] is not unreasonable for David's birth place, however, Source S3 is not particularly creditable.
2. Marriage. In the U.S. census records for David's household for the years 1810,[1] 1820,[2] 1830,[3] and 1840[4] indicate the presence of a woman of the same age as David. This is taken to be his wife. There are several clues to David's wife's identity. The first is an entry for David Drawnbarger in the Family Search database "Virginia Marriages, 1785-1940." This has him marrying Christina Beard on the 7th of August 1802 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. (This is a name index to marriage records from the state of Virginia. Microfilm copies of these records are available at the Family History Library and Family History Centers. These need to be investigated.) A second clue to the identity of David's wife comes from Bob's Genealogy Filing Cabinet, which cites "Virginia historic marriage register : Shenandoah County marriage bonds, 1772-1850," by John Vogt and T. William Kethley Jr. as the source for this marriage. A third clue come from Ancestry 's database "War of 1812 Pension Application Files Index, 1812-1815." There are two images, the first is an envelope[8] with David Tranbarger's name on it. The second image is the contents of the envelope.[7] This is a card on which is written David's name, his widow's name (Christina Tranbarger), the unit that he served with (Capt. A Fulkerson's Company in the Virginia militia). It also provides a number which appears to identify the widow's application. This needs to be followed up.
3. U. S. Decennial Census. David appears in four U. S. decennial censuses.
  1. In the first, 1810, he is married and has fathered three children, two sons and a daughter.
  2. By the second, 1820, he has fathered four additional sons.
  3. The third census, 1830, suggested that the two older sons have left home and that David has fathered two more children, a son and a daughter.
  4. In the last census in which he appears tell a more complicated story; it appears that he is living with his wife, a younger couple with a child, and a daughter. The combining the information concerning David's date of birth informs us that he was born between the 5th of August 1775 and the 31st May 1780. No slaves were owned throughout this period. No census records where found for either David or his wife in the following decades.
3.1 The 1810 U.S. census record for the household of David Tranbarger[1] informs us that he and his wife were born between 6th of August 1765 and 5th of August 1784 and that they had three living children on the 1st of August 1810. Two were boys and the third was a daughter. They were born between 6th of August 1800 and the 5th of August 1810. No slaves were owned.
3.2 The 1820 U.S. census record for the household of David Tranbarger[2] informs us that he and his wife were born between 7th of August 1775 and 6th of August 1794 and that they had seven living children on the 1st of June 1820. Six of these children were boys and the seventh was a daughter. The four youngest were boys and were born between 5th of August 1810 and the 6th of August 1820. Next in age came a son and a daughter born between 5th of August 1804 and the 6th of August 1810. The eldest son (Jacob) was born between 5th of August 1802 and the 6th of August 1804 . No slaves were owned. It should be noted that Peggy Tranbarger lived in the same county.[10] She is of the same generation as David, as she has a son it is assumed that Tranbarger is her maiden name. This suggests that Peggy may be David's sister-in-law. Peggy's son's (David's nephew) is named after Andrew Jackson.
3.3 The 1830 U.S. census record for the household of David Tranbarger[3] informs us that he and his wife were born between 1st of June 1770 and 31st of May 1780 and that they had seven children living at home on the 1st of June 1830. (The two eldest have left home and the two youngest were born since the last census.) Five of these children were boys and two were girls. The two youngest, a boy and a girl, were born between 1st of June 1820 and the 31st of May 1825. The next two boys in age were born between 1st of June 1815 and the 31st of May 1820. The final two boys were born between 1st of June 1810 and the 31st of May 1815. The final child is his eldest daughter who was born between 1st of June 1800 and the 31st of May 1810. No slaves were owned.[11] It should be noted that in addition to David, three other Tranbarger households appear in Washington County. These are Abraham, Jacobi and Margaret Tranbarger.[12] Abraham and Jacob are of the proper age to be David's two eldest sons who no longer appear in his household. Margaret is of the proper age to be David's sister or sister-in-law and may correspond to the Peggy Tranbarger noted in the 1820 U.S. census.[10]
3.4 The 1840 U.S. census record for the household of David Tranbarger[4] informs us that he and his wife were born between 1st of June 1770 and 31st of May 1780 and that they had four descendants living with them at home on the 1st of June 1840. The two eldest, a male and a female, were born between 1st of June 1810 and the 31st of May 1820. The youngest member of the household was born between 1st of June 1835 and the 31st of May 1840 and is of the correct age to be the son of the previously mentioned couple. The remaining member of the family is a girl born between 1st of June 1820 and the 31st of May 1825 who is assumed to be the youngest daughter of David. No slaves were owned.[13] It should be noted that in addition to David, John Tranbarger's household also appear in Washington County.[14]
4. War of 1812. David served as a private during the War of 1812. He served in the Virginia Militia in Captain Abram Fulkerson, Sr.'s Company in Colonel David Sanders' Regiment, 4th Brigade, Norfolk Division under Gen. Peter B. Porter. Fulkerson lived in Washington County and no doubt raised his company there. David's widow, Christina Tranbarger, applied for a pension after his death (Wid. Orig. 35515). As the is no indication that David was disabled (or killed), his widow must have applied for a pension under the act of 14 February 1871 or the act of 9 March 1878 both of which provide for the pensions to the spouses of veterans.[7][8]
5. Children. Much of what follows is speculation.

The first appearance of a Tranbarger in the U. S. census occurs in 1810. David Tranbarger lived in Washington County, Virginia. His household consisted of five people. In addition to himself, he is living with a woman of his age, who is assumed to be his wife, and three children, two boys and a girl. These are assumed to be David and his wife's children and were born (eldest) between 6th of August 1800 and the 5th of August 1808, (second eldest) between the 6th of August 1801 and the 5th of August 1809 and (third eldest) between the 6th of August 1802 and the 5th of August 1810. This time span can be future reduced by noting that David Tranbarger and Christina Beard were married on on the 7th of August 1802 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. If this is correct then the lower limit on the range of the birthdays for the first three children can be increased to 7th of May 1803, for the eldest child, to the 7th of May 1804 for the second child and 7th of May 1805 for the third child.

The four decennial census discussed above informs us that David most likely father nine children, seven sons and two daughters.

The first three, two sons and a daughter, he fathered between the 6th of August 1800 and 5th of August 1810. He fathered four additional sons between the 7th of August 1810 and the 6th of August 1820. And finally in the decade between the 1st of June 1820 and the 31st of May 1830 he fathered two more children, a son and a daughter. We consider these children in these three groups.

The three oldest children first appear in the U. S. census of 1810 where they are identified as two boys younger than 10 years of age and a single girl of younger than 10 years. Ten years later, in the 1820 U. S. census, the eldest son
5.? Nancy Jane Tranbarger married Wm. Isaac Mumpower on the 2nd of February 1871 in Washington County, Virginia. Reference to a record of their marriage is found in the FamilySearch database "Virginia Marriages, 1785-1940."[15] We are informed that Nancy Jane's parents are David and Christina Tranbarger and that she is 25 years of age. This places her birth between 3rd February 1845 and 2nd February 1846. David and his wife, Christina, of the present profile cannot be her parents as their birth dates, as determined from the U.S. Census, lie between 5th of August 1775 and 31st May 1780. This tells us that they where in their late 60's at the time of her birth. [15]
