Biography

Eleazer was born 9 Mar 1680 [1] He passed away in 1772. Roberts gives the last name as Daniel.[2] The headstone reads Daniels. Thus, he was the first in his paternal line to change his surname from Daniell to Daniels. See Eleazer's biography on the website created by David B. Daniels.[3] Eleazer settled in Mendon by 1710 and owned 1000 acres at the intersection of today's Elm and Blackstone Streets (in Blackstone). At the northern end of the Rehoboth Road (now Elm St., Blackstone) was Daniels' Hill, named for Eleazer Daniels (1681-1772) and his descendents.[4]

Research Notes

There has been uncertainty about whether Eleazer was born in 1680 or 1681, due to records indexed for both years. After reviewing the record book images, page by page, I found some of the records contained the births of his siblings, but one showed the handwritten page with Eleazer's birth record, recorded as March 9, 1681. Also discovered during that research was a preface (to the births) in the book of Vital Records of Medfield, Massachusetts to the Year 1850. It explains that the original book was damaged by fire and also had pages that were dilapidated due to age. The town selectmen voted to approve the project to copy the records, and put organize the new record book to make it easier to locate information.

I altered the size & shape of the Tombstone Photograph for Eleazer & Mary Daniels so that even the displayed thumbnail is oriented correctly. Feel free to use it if you like. The image itself was not altered in any way.

If you click on the image, then click again to get the full image, it appears right-side-up. I don't know why the thumbnail image is sideways. I'm not sure who originally uploaded the image. I know from visiting the cemetery many times that my 6th great-grandfather's grave stone has undergone a lot of change over the past 19 years.
