Zephaniah Hatch died in 1792 in Oxford, at the age of 86. He also lived in Guilford and New Haven. On October 31, 1745 he married Joanna Chittenden, who died between 1761 and 1764. Then he married Mary Smith, the daughter of Israel Smith and Hannah Dorman, and the widow of Samuel Chatterton.
With Joanna he had 7 children: Hannah, Nabby, Ichabod Sherman, Benjamin, Josiah, Timothy, and Elizabeth.
With Mary, he had 4 more children: Esther, Sybil, Alice, and Benjamin.[1]
Captain Zephaniah HATCH was born calculated 1709 in Massachusetts. He died calculated 1792 in Oxford, New Haven, CT.
A Zephaniah Hatch married Hannah Bodfish on 3 Apr 1735 in Barnstable.[2] She died in 1742.
They apparently had four children:
John, born 1736
James, born 1738
Sarah, born 1738, twin?
Zephaniah, born 1741
This same Zephaniah married Joanna CHITTENDEN on 31 Oct 1745.[3]
A Thomas is listed as the son of Benjamin in the Genealogical Notes of Cape Cod Families.[4]
In the Fletcher book about the descendants of Major Timothy Hatch, In the book compiled about the descendants of Timothy Hatch, no parentage is assigened, but he is said to be of the Falmouth line:
"Captain Zephaniah Hatch , whose exact succession has not yet been fixedItalic text , but is unmistakably clear as being from the Falmouth family , was a sea-captain and traded with the West Indies. He lived in Guilford , where he married, 1745, Johannah , daughter of Josiah and Hannah Chittenden. Josiah was uncle of Thomas Chittenden, the first governor of the State of Vermont." [5]
"Of his fifteen children, five were born in Guilford ; and they then removed to Oxford, in the same state. This was his residence the remainder of his life...There he died at upwards of eighty years of age [5]
However, in the birth records compiled and recorded in the Pane Joyce Genealogy pages, a Zephaniah is listed as son of Thomas Hatch of Scituate.[6]
I think were two men named Zephaniah, one born 1710 in Scituate and one born about 1709 in Massachusetts. I don't know which is which at this point. We just need to make sure that we don't end up with one profile that represents both people.
FSFTID
FSFTID LZBG-RB9 - note that the Zephaniah in this Family Search entry is listed as the son of Benjamin Hatch (abt.1655-bef.1736) and his wife Alice (Eddy) Hatch (1659-1710). There are some issues with that assignment, based on the supposed age of Alice Eddy. She would have been 60 when she had Benjamin. Probably the Scituate Thomas makes more sense.
Burial
Saint Peters Episcopal Cemetery, Oxford, New Haven, Connecticut[7]
Zephaniah was born about 1705. He passed away about 1792.
