James Hendricks was born in 1808, some records say in Kentucky while others say Tennessee. Not much is known about him and there is some mystery in the details of his short life. No record has been found of the marriage of James and Elizabeth Whitaker, but it probably was between 1826 and 1828 as their oldest son, Joseph was born 9 Aug 1829. Elizabeth appears on the tax records in 1844 as a widow so he must have died before that date. Family stories tell of him running rafts down the river to Tennessee. One story passed down tells of him taking a load of produce and not returning home with one only to guess what may have happened to him. Joanna Hendricks Smith, a grandaughter of James, in her life story says he died of Yellow Fever on a steamboat about 1846 and gives no more information on her grandfather. [1]
