Biography

Joseph Inman was born in Glocester, Rhode Island^[1]. Spouse: Lucy Sprague, daughter of John and Judith (Green) Sprague. Joseph served 43 days as a private in Capt. Nathaniel Healy's Company of Col Jonathan Holman's Regiment marched to Rhode Island on December 1776. Joseph was stationed at Providence Rhode Island in January 1777. Joseph was under Capt. J. Sprague's Division in October 1777. When his father died in 1778, Joseph was left half of his father's farm in Dudley. The farm, which was in the southwest corner of the town along the Quinebaug River, was sold by Joseph in 1791. Joseph moved to Pomfret, Connecticut in 1797. Joseph moved from Pomfret Connecticut to Ontario, New York. He died in Ontario, 16 Nov. 1819, while chopping a tree.

Lucy Sprague born in Killingly, Connecticut, 29 May 1753 is given as a tenth child in vol. 8 of C. W. Bowen's History of Woodstock, Connecticut, and is also found in the Killingly vital records. John Sprague moved to Woodstock, Connecticut, which adjoins Dudley, Massachusetts, no later than 1775.

[Arrest and Trial of Joseph INMAN.ARREST AND TRIAL OF JOSEPH INMAN OF ORONO, F OR MURDER IN 1801Joseph INMAN, Sen., was an early settler of what is now Orono, where he came 1783, in June. In July, 1801, one Oliver HOMES alias CHAPMAN, also a resident was missing. HOMES and INMAN had quarreled -- perhaps when under the influence of rum. With almost entire unanimity the people charged INMAN with the murder of HOMES. Complaint was made to Col. Jonathon EDDY, of Eddington.
