In 1850[2] they were living in District 10, Macon, Tennessee, USA. They were living next door to his brother John Hargis, and a Henderson Hargis ( another family member, also father in law of his son William 2nd wife Sarah). In the home were Howell 45, Nancy 50, Hannah 15, James 14, John C 12, Thomas 6. Also Milly Gammon 45 (Sister in law), and Hosier Brannan 25(unknown relationship to family at this time). Howell is a farmer with about $500 in real estate, and it is believed all family members can read.

On the 20th of October 1828, a land warrant #8691[5] was issued:

Recorded on October 31, 1828 - 706 The State of Tennessee No 8691 To all to whom these presents will come greeting...

Know ye, That for, and in the consideration of one cent per acre, paid into the office of the Entry-Taker of Smith County, and entered into on the 2nd day of October 1828 pursuant to the provisions of an Act of the General Assembly of said State, passed on the 22nd day of November, one thousand eight hundred and twenty three and the acts supplemental thereby by no 939, there is granted, by the said state of Tennessee unto Howell H. Hargis a certain tract or parcel of LAND, containing fifty acres by survey bearing date 29th day March 1827 laying in said county, on the Ridge between GOOSE CREEK and WHITE OAK CREEK and bounded as follows ???? beginning on a BLACK OAK, his NORTHWEST CORNER, running thence NORTH, one hundred and twenty six and a half poles to a CHESTNUT then EAST sixty three and a forth poles to a CHESTNUT thence SOUTH with the West Boundary of 100 acre tract one hundred twenty six and a half poles to the NORTH EAST corner of his 50 acre tract thence WEST with the NORTH boundary of the same sixty three and a forth poles to the beginning.

With the hereditaments and appurtenances. To have and to hold, the said Tract or Parcel of LAND, with it's appurtenances, to the said Howell H Hargis, and his heirs forever.

In Witness whereof, Samuel Houston, Governor of the State of Tennessee, hath hereunto set his hand, and caused the great seal of the State to be affixed, at Nashville, on the 20th day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight, and of the independence of the United States the fifty third.
