Biography

John Lefevre is the descendant of a New Netherland settler.
John Lefevre is the descendant of a Huguenot emigrant.

Jan (aka John) Lefevre was baptized in Shawangunk, Ulster, New York 30 April 1746, to parents Nathaniel Lefevre and Marietje Lefevre, witnessed by Abraham Lefevre and Maria Bevier.[1] His parents were first cousins--their fathers were brothers and their mothers were sisters[2].

Private, 2nd New Paltz Company, Revolutionary Period. A signer, along with his brothers, of the 1775 anti-British "Articles of Association."[3]

2nd husband of Eegje Swart Lefever, widow of his cousin Samuel Lefever, s/o of Capt. Matthew Lefever, his mother's brother. [1]

Not much is known about Jan and his family: The couple reportedly moved to Owasco NY sometime following their marriage.[3]

They had at least nine children, two who were baptized in Kingston, Ulster, New York at the Dutch Reformed Church, Adam and Marie (see wife's profile for more information re: children/residences).

1790: censused in Hurley, Ulster County[4].
1810: censused in Marcellus, Onondaga County[5].

Died: after 1810. Although no death record has been located, some believe Jan (John) may have died abt. 1813, possibly on the family farm. [6]
No burial site or headstone for Jan has yet been discovered.

Research Notes

Identity: Jan is at times confused with his cousin of the same name and birth year. Their fathers were brothers. Both were born just south of Rosendale, on the plains, Jan of this profile in Shawangunk and his cousin Jan in New Paltz.

Residence: While commonly mentioned as Owasco, last known residence was in Marcellus per 1810 census.

Death: Several online trees list death years anywhere from 1812-1817 with no sources.

Name Variations: Lefever, Lefevre Le Fever, Le Fevre. His son, Teunis' tombstone, and those of Teunis' children have last name Le Fever. Find A Grave: Memorial #82225065
