Biography

Samuel Church, (Joseph4, Samuel3, Samuel2, Richard1,) was born about 1754, the son of Joseph and Abigail (Smith) Church. He was a descendant of Richard Church, who came to Hadley, Massachusetts, from Hartford, Connecticut, in 1659.[1]

Samuel graduated from Harvard in 1778, and he became a medical doctor. In Sunderland, he had home lot No. 19 on the West side. His house had remained standing until the late 1800s, but little was left by the time the History of Sunderland was published in 1899. Samuel was described "as a man of good abilities and much wit and humor." "Rep. 1801 and 1804."

He married Sabra Farnum, the daughter of Benoni, around September 5, 1790. Sabra died on November 22, 1815. Samuel married second, on April 11, 1819, Lucretia, the widow of Moses Cooley. She was from Wilbraham.

Samuel died June 7, 1826, at age 72.

  1. Camilla, born July 27, 1792; married December 1, 1810, Rufus Marsh of Montague. Children: 1. Evander, lived in Vernon, Vermont. 2. Lima, married Gaius Taylor of Montague. 3. Electa, married Jonathan Slate of Bernardston. 4. Norman, was a blacksmith; resided in Brookline, Vermont. 5. Merrick, married Miranda Bartlett, resided in Amherst. 6. George. 7. Edwin. 8. Brigham. 9. Sabra, married and lived in Greenfield. 10. Amoret; married Obed Dickinson.
  2. Miranda, born December 11, 1798; married May 23, 1816, Cephas Graves.
  3. Amoret, born October 18, 1802; married November 18, 1826, Ivers Benjamin. Children: 1. Son, died young. 2. Fannie, first married _____ Pritchard; then married second _____ Ward; resided in Athol. 3. Dexter. 4. Daniel, married Edna Bemis. 5. Eber. 6. Spencer.
  4. Royal Tyler, born August 13, 1804, settled in Baltimore, Maryland; married, had one or two children; was lost on the steamer Lexington in 1840.
  5. Fanny, born October 15, 1809; married Increase Graves; married second, on November 28, 1839, Benoni Graves.
