Biography

Jona Holcomb was the first born child to John Stevens and Mary F Holcomb Bedford in San Antonio, TX. He had one brother and three sister Willa (Aunt Dickie) Lee Bedford, Albert (Uncle Ab) Sidney Bedford, Katie S and Hattie Bedford all of Fresno. That is where Jona met Daisy. They lived across the street from one another. He would pass by each day in hopes of seeing her. Jona moved to the bay area where he secured a job. He returned to Fresno where he married Daisy Sarah Foster 20 Nov 1901.They were married at the home of Daisy's parents at 1744 F Street. They made there home in Richmond, CA. Jona was native of Texas. Jona and Daisy made their home in Richmond and Jona lived in Richmond for 50 years. He was a quiet man. The family never heard him say a bad word about anyone. In the last few years of his life he made his home with his daughter Juel Clawson at 5642 Jordan Avenue, El Cerrito, CA. Jona moved to Richmond, CA in 1900 when he secured a job at the rail yard with Santa Fe Machine shop. He would service and clean the cars for their trip across the US. Jona went to work for Standard oil when it opened. He worked there as a pipe fitter until his retirement. Jona was considered an expert in his line of work. In 1901 Jona married Daisy and she moved to Richmond. In 1906 he and his wife sat on a hill (Richmond wasn't a city yet) and watched San Francisco burn after the earthquake. They led a happy fulfilling life. He was a man of faith and a very devout parishioner. Jona was a member of McKinley Lodge 347,F amd A.M. He passed away in a Berkeley Hospital at the age of 74 yr.

Research

Called San Antonio, Bexar County Vital statistics their records start 1925 phone (201)207-8815. They refered me over to Texas Vital Statitics (888)963-7111 these people do not have a clue. I specifically asked when the date of the birth records started and neither one knew. It is clearly printed on the website that they directed me to. Called the Library, no one answered and the mailbox was full. (201) 207-2500. Not much help from Texas.
