Kathleen Florence Lynn was an Irish Sinn Féin [1]politician, activist Suffragette and medical doctor.
Kathleen Lynn was born in 1874, the daughter of Robert Young Lynn and Catherine Wynne.[2][3]
Kathleen was related to Countess Markievicz. Kathleen was educated in England and Germany before graduating as a doctor in 1899 from the Royal University of Ireland.
Kathleen never married, but lived with fellow nationalist and activist Madeleine Ffrench-Mullen. The two shared a close relationship, and an analysis of Kathleen's diaries, which can be found on the Royal College of Physicians website, has suggested that the two were likely in a romantic relationship.[4]
Katheen Lynn became a GP in 1904 she practising from 9 Belgrave Road, Rathmines. She supported the Lock Out of 1913 and as a result joined the Irish Citizen Army.
Kathleen was an active suffragette, labour activist and nationalist. She was a member of the Irish Citizen Army and chief medical officer during the 1916 Easter Rising. She was imprisoned in Kilmainham Gaol, with her friends Constance Markievicz, Madeline ffrench-Mullen and Helena Moloney. She was elected to the Sinn Féin Executive in 1917. Active in the War of Independence, she was arrested in 1918 but was released to assist with the Flu Epedemic.
In 1919 she established St Ultan’s Hospital with the help of her friend Madeleine ffrench Mullen. At first only women staffed the hospital. Kathleen pioneered the use of the BCG vaccination over ten years before it was in general use in Ireland. She promoted the work of Maria Montessori, who visited [5]St Ultan’s in 1934, and established a Montessori ward in the hospital. In 1923 Lynn was elected to Dáil Éireann as a Sinn Féin Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin County constituency at the 1923 general election. She lost her seat at the [6]June 1927 general election. She also unsuccessfully contested the August 1927 by-election for Dublin County.
Kathleen Lynn died on 14 September 1955,[7] and is buried in the family plot at Deansgrange Cemetery. Because of the role she played in the 1916 Rising and the Irish War of Independence, she was buried with full military honours.[8]
