Biography

Archibald (Montgomerie) Montgomerie Eleventh Earl of Eglinton is a member of Clan Montgomery.
European Aristocracy
General Archibald Montgomerie was a member of the aristocracy in Scotland.

General Archibald Montgomerie, 11th Earl of Eglinton was born on 18 May 1726.[1] He was the son of Alexander Montgomerie, 9th Earl of Eglinton and his third wife Susanna Kennedy.[1] He was one of 11 children she bore of the twenty that he fathered.[2]

He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England[1] during his teenage years. He then went to Winchester College.[3] At age 13, Montgomerie joined the army.

He married, firstly, Lady Joan Lindsay, daughter of George Lindsay-Crawford, 21st Earl of Crawford and Jean Hamilton, on 30 March 1772.[1]

He married, secondly, Frances Twysden, daughter of Sir William Twysden, 6th Bt. and Mary Jervis, on 9 August 1783[1] and divorced on 6 February 1788 on account on her affair with Douglas Hamilton, the 8th Duke of Hamilton with whom she allegedly had a daughter.[4]

Montgomerie fought in the Seven Years' War(1754 to 1763),[5] where he served with George Washington.[6] He also was the patron for the poet, Robert Burns.[7]

He was Member of Parliament for Ayrshire between 1761 and 1768.[1] He held the office of Equerry to Queen Charlotte between 1761 and 1769.[1] He held the office of Governor of Dumbarton Castle between 1764 and 1782.[1] He was also Deputy Ranger of Hyde and St. James's Parks between 1766 and 1768.[1]

He was Colonel of the 51st Foot between 1767 and 1795.[1]

He succeeded to the titles of 12th Lord Montgomerie and 11th Earl of Eglinton on 25 October 1769.[1] He held the office of Representative Peer between 1776 and 1796,[1] and was Governor of Edinburgh Castle between 1782 and 1796.[1] He gained the rank of General in 1793.[1] He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Ayrshire between 1794 and 1796.[1] He was Colonel of the 2nd Dragoons between 1795 and 1796.[1]

He died on 30 October 1796 at age 70.[1]n.[8] Although the Earldom passed to Hugh Montgomerie, the majority of Archibald Montgomerie's wealth went to his daughter Mary.[6]Mary's son, Archibald Montgomerie would eventually become the 13th Earl of Eglinton.[9]

There is a portrait of Montgomerie in Windsor Castle. It was offered back to the family, by King William IV, but the 13th Earl of Eglinton declined. He felt that it was an honour to have a portrait of his grandfather, at Windsor Castle.[6]

Lady Mary Montgomerie+[10] d. 12 Jun 1848. Mary was married to Lord Hugh Montgomerie. Their son, Archibald Montgomerie, 13th Earl of Eglinton, would eventually succeed to the Earldom. It is through Mary that the lineal and male lines of the Montgomerie family would unite. This uniting would return the Earldom of Eglinton to her descendants.[4]
Lady Susanna Montgomerie[1] b. 26 May 1788, d. 16 Nov 1805. Susanna died unmarried. Her real father may have been Douglas Hamilton.[4]
