Biography

A different John Brown (b by 1591) and his wife, Dorothy (Unknown) Brown sailed in 1635 aboard the Elizabeth, settled first at Plymouth, removed by 1643 to Taunton, by 1647 to Rehoboth, died on 10 April 1662 at Rehoboth.^[1] They also had a daughter named Mary Browne; she married to Thomas Willett.

Origin

Mary was born on "24: 1 mo: 1636" ( 24 March 1636/7) at Watertown, Massachusettes, "d. John and Dority," the daughter of John Browne and Dorothy Unknown.^[2]

Origin Hypothesis

William Potter may have married Dorothy, the widow of John Brown/Browne, and the mother of daughters Hannah and Mary.

Dorothy Brown was named in the birth records of both her daughters at Watertown, Hannah and her sister Mary.^[4] There is no further record of either daughter, and there is no actual record of Dorothy's marriage to William Potter.^[4] However, Anderson calls the circumstantial evidence "highly suggestive."^[4] Six acres of homestall and the Remote Meadows grant, which were originally John Brown's Watertown land grants, ended up in the hands of William Potter.^[4] This was commonly seen when a widow remarried.

We have no further information about this Mary Brown, not even a hypothesis in connection with William Potter of Watertown, who removed in 1645 to Stamford, Connecticut.^[4]

This Mary Brown should not be confounded with the Mary Brown, daughter of John Brown (b by 1591) and his wife, Dorothy who sailed in 1635 aboard the Elizabeth, settled first at Plymouth, removed by 1643 to Taunton, by 1647 to Rehoboth, died on 10 April 1662 at Rehoboth.^[1]
