Charles Stewart (4th Earl of Traquair) was born circa 1659. He was the son of John Stewart (2nd Earl of Traquair) and his wife Lady Anne Seton.
He was educated at St Andrews. He gained the title of 4th Earl of Traquair. He was Privy Counsellor (1687–88) and in 1686.
In 1708 he was remanded in custody at Edinburgh Castle and interrogated in London for suspected involvement in the abortive French descent on Scotland to help the Jacobites.
On 9 January 1694 Charles Stewart was married to Mary Maxwell the daughter of Robert Maxwell (4th Earl of Nithsdale) and his wife Lady Lucy Douglas. They had issue:
