Biography

His children: Samuel Alexander, Malinda Jane, James M., William Carrel, Jr., John William, Christy Ann, John, Zachariah Crawford, Hamilton N., Rachel Elizabeth, Isaac Joseph, Thomas McDonald, George Washington, & Andrew Jackson, Charles Edwin.

His first marriage was to Delila Crawford in Carlyle, Clinton Co, IL on March 10, 1838. They moved to Wise Co, TX sometime after 1850. Their last child, Andrew Jackson, was born in Prairie Point, Wise Co, TX on July 2, 1860.

It is thought that Delilah may have died around 1862 during childbirth. Following her death, William took George, Andrew, & Rachel back to Illinois where his brothers lived. They remained there and were later taken in and raised by their older brother, Hamilton Newton Hays, & his wife, Nancy. After reaching manhood, George and Andrew later went to live with their brother John William Hays.

On his way back to Texas, William met Dr. Eli Sigler Thomas who lived in Gainesville, Cooke Co, TX with his wife, Mary Susan Hedenberg, & their two children, Cad & Mary Alice. Dr. Thomas was killed on Oct. 19, 1862, by outlaws after he recognized one of the men he was treating for gun shot wounds.

William married Dr. Thomas's widow, Mary Susan (Hendenberg) Thomas, in Bowie, Montague Co, TX on March 3, 1863.
