Lieutenant Josiah Mosher served in the 8th Massachusetts Regiment. When his brother, Liutenant John Mosher was disabled by sunstroke at the charge of Monmouth, Josiah took command of his brother's company and marched with Washington to the Hudson and to the end of the war.
In 1781 he migrated to the Whitesboro area and purchased land from Judge White. He married Rebekah Doolitle, sister of General George Doolittle.
Josiah died at the age of 91. He was the son of John William Mosher (1715-1774) and Elizabeth Lawrence (1720-1760)
He was brother to David & Daniel Mosher (both died at the Battle of Bunker Hill), Lt. John Mosher (Battle of Oriskany, etal.), James Mosher (Rev. War MA SAR 83568), Abijah Mosher (Pvt. MA Minute-Men), Mary Mosher Grimes and Belinda Mosher Knight.
He was the Father of Hannah Mosher Irish, Cornelia Mosher Millard, Samuel Emerson, Rebecca Mosher Priest Bishop, Polly Mosher Luce, Nancy Mosher Shepard, Elizabeth Betsey Mosher Cook, Belinda, Hiram Mosher, and George Doolittle Mosher.
In 1902 The Oneida County Chapter of DAR recognized several Revolutionary War soldiers, including Josiah. SAR metal markers were to be placed on each of the noted soldiers' graves. Josiah, along with several others, were not marked because they ran out of markers. To this day, he has not received his graveside marker.
Keeper of Family History
Genealogist William Collins Mosher interviewed the elderly Josiah in 1845 and mentions him many times in the final publication of Origin and History of The Mosher Family[12]. About Josiah, the author says this in the Introduction:
The compiler of this book made him a visit in 1845, and received from him much reliable information in regard to the origin of his family, and in regard to Sir Hugh Mosher, who made a large fortune in Calcutta while a member of the East India Company.
It should be mentioned that this particular Sir Hugh Mosher has not yet been found. Though other wealthy English Moshers (going by the Mosyer Spelling) have been found, namely William Mosyer Merchant of Manchester and his brothers in London, as well as their probable descendants in Kent, philanthropist Maria Mosyer, widow of Thomas Mosyer, a couple said to be the last of the Mosyer line in Orpington, Kent. The exact connection of Josiah's Colonial American family line to the English antecedents is a matter of on-going research.
