Samuel Calton, son of Joel Calton of Virginia, and Julia Bailey Calton, of Pennslyvania, was born in 1823 in Giles, County, Tennessee. The family moved to Missouri in 1840.
Samuel Calton married Jane Kindrick. They both lived in Wright County, Missouri. Jane's parents were Edmond and Margaret Kindrick of North Carolina, who moved to Missouri from Monroe County, Tennessee and settled in Wright County, Missouri where Edmond worked as a millwright.
Samuel Calton and Jane Kindrick were married in the mid 1850's and moved to a farm on Kings River in Arkansas. Samuel worked for the Granby Mining Company mining silver. He went to California to mine gold and died on the way back, just a few miles from home, and is buried on the family farm. Some say that he simply fell ill and died--others say he was killed for his gold. After her husband died, Jane moved back to Wright County, Missouri and is believed to be buried near Hartville, Missouri.
Samuel Calton is buried on the farm he had along Kings River near Kingston, Arkansas.
Samuel Calton and Jane Kindrick Calton had five children: William, (1855); and Samuel Jr., (1857); both died young; Joseph (1856-1880) married Jemima Cook (1858-1932) and had six children; Mason (1851-1930) married Mary Phelan; Richard (1859-1948) married Talitha Hibdon and had eight children.
