Biography

Jedidiah (Jr) was born in 1769. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1794,[1][2] and is listed in the alumni reports as a teacher. In Essex, VT, he married Betsey Post, a resident of Lower Canada in 1800. It is noteworthy that his name is spelled "Jedididiah" on the certified marriage record. On that record he is listed as a resident of Essex. [3] He passed away in 1848, according to most sources; [4][5] the Dartmouth Catalogue of 1890 lists his death as 1849 at 79 years and gives no place of death. The Dartmouth Catalogue of 1900 lists his death as February 2, 1848 in Jericho, VT. The Vermont Vital Records do not show his death at all. Supposedly my great-grandfather, James Miner, garnered Jedidiah's death record from the Jericho (VT) Center Cemetery, when he entered it in the family Bible. I have visited the cemetery, but the stone is unreadable. James' wife was Rosamond Aurelia Castle. Her grandmother was Eunice Aurelia Lane, who married Joel Castle, and her great-grandfather was Roger Lane (b. 1767), older brother of Jedidiah (Jr) Lane. Jedidiah may have been buried in Vermont, but died somewhere else. At that time farmers, teachers and merchants travelled freely between Vermont and Canada. In the History of Argenteuil, Quebec, [6] there is a reference by E. S. Orr to a teacher named Jedediah Lane. "My education was limited to the common school ; my first teacher was Jedediah Lane..." Perhaps Jedidiah died in Canada and was buried in Vermont. (Name spellings ARE different.) The sources listed as General Catalogue of Dartmouth College (1890 & 1900) and History of the Counties of Argenteuil, Quebec and Prescot, Ontario are available for download at Google Books.
