Biography

Alexander Nixon Montgomery was born at Clontarf, County Dublin, circa 1847[1] or 1848 (aged 53 in 1901,[2] aged 83 at his death in 1931[3]).

Alexander was the son of George Montgomery, MD.[4]

Alexander was the brother of:

  1. Mary Montgomery, born in County Dublin circa1855;[5]

On 26 January, 1870, Alexander Nixon Montgomery, of 45 York Street [Dublin], became a Licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.[6]

Alex Nixon Montgomery. of full age, Physician and Surgeon, resident of 45 Upper Sackville Street, Dublin, son of George Montgomery, MD, married Anna Sophia Adams, of full age, resident of Shinan House, daughter of Benjamin S Adams, JP, on 15 September 1885, at the parish church in the parish of Shercock, in the Registrar's District of Bailieborough, County Cavan, according to the rites of the Church of Ireland, by licence, in the presence of Alexander Nixon Montgomery and Ben S Adams.[4] Shinan House was in the townland of Shinan, Shercock civil parish, Clankee Barony, County Cavan[7]

Alex and Anna had children:

  1. George Alexander Nixon Montgomery, born on 19 November, 1886, at 45 Upper Sackville Street, Dublin City,[8]died 13 July 1887;[3]
  2. Jeannie Holmes Montgomery, born circa 1889;[2]
  3. Georgina Hickson Montgomery, born circa 1891;[2]
  4. Alexander Nixon Montgomery, born 18 May 1894 at Dublin City,[9] died 9 July 1957;[3]
  5. Elizabeth Mary Anna Montgomery, born circa 1899;[2]

Elizabeth Montgomery, widow, died in her home at 45 Upper Sackville Street, Dublin, on 21 December, 1894.[10] Probate of Elizabeth's will was granted at Dublin on 26 September, 1895, to Alexander Nixon Montgomery of 45 Upper Sackville Street, Physician and Surgeon (Effects £21 5s 1d).[10]

When the 1901 Census of Ireland was taken on 31 March, the house at 45 in Upper Sackville Street, North City District Electoral Division, St Thomas' Parish, Dublin City Barony, County Dublin, was a 16 room, first-class private dwelling, in the middle of various business premises including shops, a Short Hand School, a Blind Institution, the Catholic Club, and had ten residents who were:[2]

  • Alexander Nixon Montgomery, 53 yrs old, head of the family, born in County Dublin, a physician, who could read and write and belonged to the Church of Ireland;
  • Anna Sophia Montgomery, 40 yrs old, Alexander's wife, born in County Cavan, who could read and write and belonged to the Church of Ireland;
  • Jeannie Holmes Montgomery, 12 yrs old, Alexander's daughter, born in Dublin City, a scholar who could read and write and belonged to the Church of Ireland;
  • Georgina Hickson Montgomery, 10 yrs old, Alexander's daughter, born in Dublin City, a scholar who could read and write and belonged to the Church of Ireland;
  • Alexander Nixon Montgomery, 6 yrs old, Alexander's son, born in Dublin City, a scholar who could read and write and belonged to the Church of Ireland;
  • Elizabeth Mary Anna Montgomery, 2 yrs old, Alexander's daughter, born in Dublin City, who belonged to the Church of Ireland;
  • Mona Edith Lurline Adams, 19 yrs old, Alexander's niece, born on the Isle of Man, a scholar who could read and write and belonged to the Church of Ireland;
  • Maud Annie Adams, 13 yrs old, Alexander's niece, born at County Cavan, a scholar who could read and write and belonged to the Church of Ireland;
  • Kate Mary Proudman, 22 yrs old, Alexander's domestic servant - cook, born in Kings County, who could read and write and was a Roman Catholic; and
  • Elizabeth Whelehan, 23 yrs old, Alexander's domestic servant - nurse, born in Kings County, who could read and write and was a Roman Catholic.

When the 1911 Census of Ireland was taken on 2 April, the ten residents of the house at 45 in Upper Sackville Street, North City District Electoral Division, St Thomas' Parish, County Dublin, were:[5]

  • Alexander Nixon Montgomery, 63 yrs old, head of the family, born in County Dublin, Physician and Surgeon, FRCPI LM [Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland - Licence in Midwifery] - LRCSI [Licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland], Seontay Vaccine Dept LSRI, who could read and write and belonged to the Church of Ireland;
  • Anna Sophia Montgomery, 50 yrs old, Alexander's wife, born in County Cavan, who had been married to Alexander for 25 years and had 5 children with him of whom 4 were living, could read and write and belonged to the Church of Ireland;
  • Jeannie Holmes Montgomery, Alexander's 22 year-old, daughter, born in Dublin City, a scholar who could read and write and belonged to the Church of Ireland;
  • Alexander Nixon Montgomery, Alexander's 16 year-old son, born in Dublin City, a scholar who could read and write and belonged to the Church of Ireland;
  • Anna Elizabeth Mary Montgomery, Alexander's 12 year-old daughter, born in Dublin City, a scholar who belonged to the Church of Ireland;

  • Bridget Proudman, 29 yrs old, Alexander's servant, Cook - Domestic, born in Kings County, who could read and write and was a Roman Catholic;
  • Sarah Proudman, 24 yrs old, Alexander's servant, Housemaid - Domestic, born in Kings County, who could read and write and was a Roman Catholic; and
  • Richard Robinson, a 16 year-old male visitor, born in Kings County, an Apprentice Upholsterer, who could read and write and was a Roman Catholic.
Alex Nixon Montgomery, of 65 Waterloo Rd Dublin, died on 23 April 1931, aged 83, and was buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery, Dublin, where his headstone is inscribed:[3]
