Biography

Pauline Dolhun was born "Pelagia Dolhun"[1][2] on 25 March 1896 in Putiatycze, Lviv, Ukraine,[2] she was the daughter of Josef Dolhun.[1][3]

Pauline attended college in the Ukraine[4] before coming to the United States. Her family recalls her saying that she came to America because Polish discrimination against native Ukrainians prevented her from finding work as a teacher, despite her education. She departed from the port of Bremen and arrived in New York on the ship Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse on 25 September 1912.[1]

On 24 July 1915, Pauline married Julian Tesluk in Passaic, Passaic County, New Jersey.[5] Shortly after their marriage in 1915, Pauline and Julian moved to Buffalo, Erie County, New York,[4] where they were living in the 1920 U.S. census.[6] They were the parents of five children, all born in Buffalo:[4][3]

  2. William B.
  3. Henry G.
  4. Albert P.
  5. Irene

Together, Pauline and Julian ran a series of restaurants, groceries, and butcher shops in Buffalo until Julian's death in 1965. After that, Pauline managed the family's real estate properties and was an active member of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church.[4] She died on 20 November 1980 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York[2] and was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Tonawanda, Erie County, New York.[4] She was survived by four of her children (Anna died in the 1918 flu epidemic) and a sister, "Parania Galacha" who lived in Ukraine.[4]

Research Notes

Who were the siblings of Pelagia Dolhun?

Pauline's obituary stated that she was survived by a sister, "Parania Galacha," who was living in Ukraine in 1980.[4] Was she the same person as "Paranka Dolhun," who was listed as Pauline's contact when she landed in New York?[1]

Pauline traveled to the United States in 1912 on the Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse with a group of three others from Putiatycze, all reporting that their destination was 1020 Manhattan Avenue, Brooklyn, New York. All four of these individuals were apparently related in some way to a person at that address:

  • Anna Halaberda, 17, daughter of Dmytro Halaberda of Putiatycze, single maid, (passenger list line 19), "cousin of Paranka Dolhun, 1020 Manhattan Ave., Brooklyn."
  • Katarzyna Pucaj, 18, daughter of Dmytro Pucaj of Putiatycze, single maid, (passenger list line 20), "cousin of Paranka Dolhun, 1020 Manhattan Ave., Brooklyn."
  • Pelagia Dolhun, daughter of Josef Dolhun of Putiatycze, 18, single maid, (passenger list line 21), " sister of Paranka Dolhun, 1020 Manhattan Ave., Brooklyn."
  • Michal Mytiuk, 30, husband of Maryna Mytiuk, married farm worker, (passenger list line 22), "cousin of Antoni Klymsyk, 1020 Manhattan Ave., Brooklyn."

The handwriting is difficult to make out and it is hard to tell whether the word at the end of both names, "Paranka Dolhun ______" and "Antoni Klymsyk_______" is a common last name (which might suggest that the two were a married couple), or if it is some other word, so no conclusion can be drawn at this time.
