Biography

Lady Margaret Tufton was the daughter of Margaret Sackville and her husband, John Tufton, second earl of Thanet.[1] Lady Margaret's maternal grandparents were Lady Anne Clifford, Countess of Dorset and later Pembroke and Montgomery, the daughter of George Clifford, third earl of Cumberland, and her first husband, Richard Sackville third earl of Dorset.[1]

Lady Margaret had siblings:

  1. Nicholas Tufton, third earl of Thanet, born 7 August 1631,[2] died 1679,[3] married on Easter Monday, 11 April, 1664, at "Cliffords Inne in London Towne", to Lady Elizabeth Boyle, second daughter to Richard earl of Corke and his wife, Elizabeth Clifford, by Mr Byfield, chaplian to the earl of Cork;[4]
  2. Mr John Tufton, fourth earl of Thanet, born 1638, died 1680, never married;[3]
  3. Mr Richard, fifth earl of Thanet, born 1640, died 1729, never married;[3]
  4. Lady Frances Drax, born 23 March, 1642, in Thanet House, Aldergate Street, London Town, married Mr Henry Drax in Thanet House, 23 February 1665, died giving birth to a still born child on 22 November, 1666, at Buckwell in Kent near Hothfeild, and was buried with her child on 1 December in the vault of Raynham Church in Kent, with her father and grandfather;[5]
  5. Mr Thomas Tufton, sixth earl of Thanet, born 30 August 1644,[6] died 1729, married Catherine Cavendish, the daughter of the Duke of Newcastle,[3] chosen on 2 March 1668 to be Burgess for the town of Appleby and first sat in the House of Commons on 10 March,[7] had five daughters so the earldom went to his brother Sackville's son, Sackville;[3]
  6. Lady Cecily Tufton, died 29 December 1672 on the Island of Guernsey,[8] married on 12 February, 1667, Mr Christopher Hatton, oldest son of Christopher, Lord Hatton of Kirkby in Northamptonshire, by Dr Evans, one of the Duchess of York's chaplains, in Sir Charles Littleton's House in the Minories;[7]
  7. Lady Mary, died 20 January 1674, [9] married Mr William Walter;[10]
  8. Mr Sackville Tufton,[11] born 1646, died 1721, married Elizabeth the daughter of Ralph Wilbraham, his son, also called Sackville, born 1688, was the 7th Earl of Thanet;[3]
  9. Mr George Tufton, born 1650, died 1670, never married;[3]
  10. Lady Anne Tufton, born 22 June 1654, fifth daughter and twelfth child, second of that name, married in St Botolph's Church in Aldersgate Street, London, on 17 April, 1673, to Mr Samuell Grimston, widower, son of Sir Harbottle Grimston, previously married to the daughter of Sir Hennige Finch, the King's Attorney General ;[12]

On 18 July 1653, Lady Margaret married in her father's house in Aldersgate Street, London, George Coventry, 3rd Baron Coventry,[13] the eldest son of Thomas, Lord Coventry,[14] whose father Thomas Lord Coventry was Lord Keeper of the Great Seale of England.[15]

Margaret and George's first child was born on 2 September 1654, in the house of her father-in-law, Lord Coventry, at Croome in Worcestershire. He was christened John on 19 of that month. Margaret's youngest sister, Anne, was nine weeks old. Her grandmother, Lady Ann Clifford, remarks in her diary that her grand-daughter Margaret is suckling her child herself, as her daughter also suckled most of her children.[13]

On 28 July, 1656, Margaret had a second child, Miss Anne Coventry, who died the following day.[16]

On 11 September in 1656, Margaret's brother Lord Nicholas Tufton was imprisoned in the Tower of London by order of the Lord Protector and his Council, where he remained under restraint until 25 June 1658.[16]

On 14 September 1657, Margaret had her second daughter and third child in her father, "the Earle of Thannett's House att Hothfield in Kent", where Margaret was also born. The baby was christened Margaret the following day.[17]

On 27 August 1659, Lady Margaret Coventry delivered a son, Thomas, her fourth child, and now second son, in the house of her father-in-law, Lord Coventry, at Croome in Worcestershire.[1] Thomas Conventry died at Croome on 17 June 1660, and was buried in the church there.[18]

On 6 July 1661, Lady Margaret had her third son and fifth child, Mr William Conventrie, who died 14 July the following year.[19]
