Biography

Thomas Gregory[1] Taylor was born on 15 Aug 1844 (unsourced) to Jarrus T Taylor and (presumed wife) Rebecca C. (Empson) Taylor.
Thomas married Nancy Josephine Bumpus on 28 Jun 1872[2][1]. The couple had two children:

Nancy died 30 Aug 1877 and Thomas then married Nancy's younger sister, Zepora Westie (Bumpus) Taylor sometime between Sep 1877 and Dec 1878. Thomas and Westie had two children that lived to adulthood:

  • Oscar Taylor (b. Sep 1879)[3]
  • Winfred Cullum Taylor (b. 17 Dec 1881)[4]
  • Ethel V. Taylor (b. Aug 1884)[5].

Thomas died 17 Nov 1887 probably in Bumpus Mills, Tennessee, where he is buried in Morgan Cemetery[6].

Research Notes

  • The first and middle names of Thomas are sourced only in Acree[1] though one can just barely read the initials "T.G. on the gravestone[6] and in the marriage record[2] which lists him with initials "T.J.". The middle initial "J." in the marriage record could be a confusion with the middle initial of the bride so middle initial "G." is thought to be more probable.
  • The birth date of Thomas in the original of this profile show Thomas being born about 15 Aug 1844 - this is unsourced. The FindAGrave source[6] depicts the gravestone but it is too worn to be readable. The text of the FindAGrave entry says he was born 15 Jan 1854. One of these two unsourced dates may be right. The 1850[7], 1860[8] and 1880[3] censuses each give an approximate year of birth as ~1843, ~1844 and ~1844 respectively. These dates are much closer to "about 15 Aug 1844" and this date has been retained.
  • The first name of the father in the 1850 census is hard to decipher. The indexer of the record gave up and listed no first name. My interpretation is "Jorrot" which would be an interpretation of what the census taker thought he heard - could be anything. The name used in the biography is readable from the father's gravestone.
  • The 1850 census and the 1860 census do not align well with each other. 1850 shows the father as born in 1804 or 1805 in NC, with presumed wife Rebecca (born 1820 or 1821 in TN). 1860 shows the father as born in 1819 or 1820 in TN, with presumed wife Sarah (born 1829 or 1830 in TN). The two following censuses show that the father's birth year and place is likely to be 1804 or 1805 in NC so it has been assumed that the 1860 census is bad reporting for birth place and age. The two following censuses show that birth year 1829 to 1931 is probably right for Sarah (though she is shown as born in KY instead of TN). So either the name and wife's birth year were misreported in the 1850 census or the wife (and presumed mother of Thomas) was a prior marriage. The latter theory is supported by the fact that the death certificate for a later child of Jarrus, Leander Taylor (born about 1864), gives his father as "Josh Taylor" and his mother as "Hawkins" but from the marriage record of Jarrus and Rebecca (15 Jan 1837) we know that the wife's name was "Rebecca C Empson". Inconclusive at this point.
  • The marriage date of Thomas and Westie is calculated as a period between one month after the death of first wife Nancy and 9 months before the birth of Westie's child Oscar.
