Biography

Ellen (Collins) Burke was born in Ireland.

Ellen Collins was born before 1800 in County Cork, Ireland, possibly in or near Boolybane townland, Creagh Civil Parish, Skibbereen County Cork, Ireland. She is probably related to Cornelius "Con" Collins, as she is a baptismal sponsor for his son Peter Collins in June 1817, along with her husband Randal "Randle" Burke. She may be the daughter of another Peter Collins if Con Collins is Ellen Collins's brother naming his son after Con's and maybe Ellen's father.

Ellen Collins married Randal/Randle Burke before 1818, and they had children:

1. Timothy Randal Burke, born between 1818 and 1825, and probably in 1820. He died November 1893, with his age listed as 65. His estate was probated in 1894. He is probably named after Randal's father who is likely a Timothy Burke.
2. Catherine "Cate" Burke, who might be her step-daughter. More research is necessary.
3. Several other step-children born after 1824 to Randal's second wife Anne "Nancy" Keefe.

Ellen Collins is the baptismal sponsor or godmother for Randal Burke born 1822, the son of Timothy Burke, Sr. and his wife [[MInihane-13|Margaret Minihane Ellen's husband Randal or Randle Burke. is the other sponsor and shares the child's name. Randal of 1822 is probably their nephew, and Timothy Burke, Sr. is probably Randal's brother and Ellen's brother-in-law. More research is necessary.

Ellen Collins might be the Ellen Collins who is the baptismal sponsor for Honora Crowley, daughter of Cornelius Crowley and Ellen Collins, who was baptized December 1822 in or near Skibbereen, but we are not sure if this is the same lady. The mother's name is also Ellen Collins.

Ellen Collins Burke passed away between March 1822 and January 1824. She may have died after only a few years of marriage, as we are having trouble connecting her with death records after 1864. We are not finding children for her after 1822. We are finding a Randal Burke having children with Anne Keefe iin December 1824, and are researching to see if Ellen passed away by 1824, and Randal remarried.

Research Notes

1. Boolybane townland is near Castlefreke in Rathbarry, County Cork, Ireland.
2. The Skibbereen baptism of John Collins, son of Patrick Collins and Joanna Sullivan in July 1822 has two Collins sponsors, Ellen Collins and Con Collins and we don't know if that is this Ellen Collins and if Ellen Collins is still living by July 1822.
3. We think that Ellen Burke, widow, passed away on February 20, 1894, at age 82, in Caheragh, born in 1812, probably isn't the correct Ellen Burke. Mary Collins was present at her death. This is a likely record for Ellen Collins Burke. We do not know yet how she may be related to Mary Collins, who could be a sister or a niece or other relative. However, she may have been older than 82, because Ellen Collins Burke gave birth to Timothy Randal Burke by 1825. But probably this is not Ellen Collins Burke . More research is necessary, as death records are not available yet before 1864.
4. Death records available for Ellen Burke in Skibbereen Registration District are:

• 1896 - Ellen Burke, spinster, of Drimoleague passed away in a workhouse at age 65. She would have been born in 1821
• 1894 - Ellen Burke, widow, passed away on February 20, 1894, at age 82, in Caheragh, so she would have been born in 1812. Mary Collins was present at her death. This is a likely record for Ellen Collins Burke. We do not know yet how she may be related to Mary Collins, who could be a sister or a niece or other relative
• 1891 - Ellen Burke, widow of Daniel Burke, passed away She is not Ellen Collins Burke. She may be Ellen Minihane Burke.
• 1887 - Ellen Burke, widow, age 72, dies at the Convent in Skibbereen. She would have been born about 1815, too young to be a baptismal sponsor in 1817
• 1884 - Ellen Burke, mother of Johanna Keefe, passed away December 17, 1884 in Ardagh, Myross. Johanna Keefe was present at death.
• 1881 - Ellen Burke, age 25, passed away. She is too young to be Ellen Collins Burke
• 1879 - Ellen Burke, widow of a Laborer, dies in a workhouse.

1. Possible relatives of Ellen Collins:

• Ellen Collins is the baptismal sponsor for Peter Collins, baptized June 1,1817 in Boolybane townland, son of Cornelius Collins and his wife Catherine Lynch.
• On August 8-23, 1875, a Timothy Collins baptized, born to Cornelius Collins and Mary Minihan, sprs. Patrick Collins and Mary Connolly. This Cornelius Collilns is likely fifty years younger than Peter Collins father. (Aughadown, Ballyouctra #1971)
• On January 23, 1876, a Jeremiah Minihan baptized, born to Jeremiah Minihan and Mary Hegarty, sprs. Tom Connolly and Nora Hegarty (Aughadown, Ballyouctra #3035). Not sure why they might be related!
