Robert FitzRobert was the son of Robert de Caen or FitzRoy, Earl of Gloucester (Robertus filius comitis Glaocestrie dominm ... patri Roberto filia regis, Gloecestrie comiti). He is often considered to be an illegitimate son with an unnamed woman[1], [2] but a charter dated circa 1160, names him as the son of Mabel, Countess of Gloucester (M(abilia) comitissa et filii mei, Willelmus consul, et Robertus), though it it possibly a mistake in the charter for her son Roger.[3]
Robert is addressed as Castellan (or Constable) of the castle of Gloucester by Henry II in an undated writ. (Henricus, rex Angliæ et dux Normanniæ et Aquitanniæ et comes Andegaviæ, Roberto filio comitis Gloucestriæ constabulario castri, salutem.)[4]
He married Hawise de Reviers (de Redvers) daughter of Baldwin de Reviers, Earl of Devon and his wife Adelise. The marriage is confirmed by a gift made by Hawise to Quarr Abbey, Isle of Wight, with her husband Robert, son of the Earl of Gloucester. The charter which isn't actually cited, is dated somewhere between June 1141 and 1161, and probably before October 1147.[5]
They seemed to have one daughter:
Mabel, married (1) Jordan de Champernoun (Chambernun); (2) William de Soliers, having issue with both husbands.
According to the Chronicle of Robert of Torigni, he died in 1170 (Mortuo Roberto filio Roberti comitis Gloecestriae). [6]
