Thomas White the second son of John White MP of Tuxford in Nottinghamshire and his wife, Jane Williamson was born in August 1667.[1] He was educated at Christ's College, Cambridge [1] and Gray's Inn. [2]
On 29 July 1698 he married Bridget Taylor, daughter of Richard Taylor MP of Wallingwells and his wife, Bridget Knight[1] at Carlton in Lindrick in Nottinghamshire. [3] Bridget brought him £5000 and, when her father died the following year, the Wallingwells estate. [1] They were the parents of 2 sons, John and Taylor, and 3 daughters, Bridget, Anne and Mary. [4]
In January 1701 he was returned to Parliament as member for East Retford but was unseated in favour of Sir Willoughby Hickman on petition [5] but at the December election that year he was returned with John Thornhaugh, defeating Hickman and William Levinz. [5] In July 1702 he and Thorhaugh were returned again but were unseated on petition of Hickman and Levinz.[5] 1705 saw him returned with William Levinz defeating Sir Hardolph Wasteneys, Bt. and Robert Molesworth who then managed to unseat them on petition. In 1708 Thomas and Levinz defeated Robert Molesworth and sat unhindered but in 1710 when he and his brother-in-law, Thomas Westby took the seat defeating Willoughby Hickman (son of Sir Willoughby), Molesworth and Bryan Cooke they were unseated on petition of Hickman and Cooke.[5]
Having succeeded his father in 1713 [1] Thomas turned his attention back to Parliament and was returned with John Digby in 1715. [6] He took the seat with Patrick Chaworth in 1722 and with Sir Robert Clifton in 1727.[6] Thomas died 30 September 1732 and was buried under the high altar in Tuxford church. [7]
St Nicholas, Tuxford |
Thepeerage gives his date of death as 24 February 1730. [4] This conflicts with Venn who gives 1732 [2] as does Nottinghamshire History [8] and Wikipedia. [9]
A will or burial record is needed for conclusive proof.
