Born on 8 December 1678 Horatio Walpole, was son of Robert Walpole[1]and his wife, Mary Burwell. [2][3] Horatio, son of Robert Walpole & Mary, was baptised on 19 December 1678 in New Houghton, Norfolk, England.[4]
He was educated at Eton, King's College, Cambridge and Lincoln's Inn. [1]
Like his older brother, Robert, and his younger brother, Galfridus, he entered Parliament. He was returned for the first time as member for Lostwithiel in January 1710 and continued to serve almost continually until a year before his death. [1]
On 21 July 1720 he married Mary Magdalen Lombard, daughter of Peter Lombard of Burnham Thorpe in Norfolk. [5]They had at least nine children:
Horatio Walpole, 2nd Baron Walpole (1723–1809), created Earl of Orford in 1806[6]
The Hon. Mary Walpole (born 25 February 1726), who married Maurice Suckling.[7]
The Hon. Thomas Walpole (6 October 1727 – March 1803), who married *Elizabeth Vanneck (died 9 June 1760) on 14 November 1753.[8]
The Hon. Richard Walpole (5 December 1728 – 18 August 1798), who married Margaret Vanneck (before 1742—9 May 1818) on 22 November 1758.[9]
In April 1721 his elder brother, Robert, achieved the position of power now referred to as the First Prime Minister. [15] It was said that Horatio was of no service to his brother, except as his dictionary! [1]
