Biography

Marguerite Grabert has German Roots.

Anne Marguerite Grabert was born to Andre Christian Grabert and Ann Marie Baumann c.1737 at a German settlement on the Mississippi River called Côte des Allemands, in French Louisiana. The German settlers quickly adapted to French.

Known siblings:
  1. Christine Greber (c.1725) (m. Andre Zinck)[1]
  2. Jacob "Jacques" Greber (c.1730)
  3. Ambrose Greber (c.1741)

Marguerite married Gaspard Dore on January 10, 1755 at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Côte des Allemands, Louisiana.[2]

Known children of the marriage:
  1. Jacob Charles "Jacques" Dore (c.1755)
  2. Francois Dore (c.1757)[3]
  3. Helene Gaspard Dore (c.1763) [4]
  4. Christine Dore (c.1765) (m. Pierre dit l'Hiver Menard) [5]
  5. Catherine Gaspard Dore (c.1767) (m. Mathurin Hebert)[6]
  6. Philippe dit Flotte Dore (c.1768)[7]
  7. Charlotte Dore (c.1769) (m. 1. Thomas Conard; m. 2. Juan Romero)[8]
  8. Louis dit Gaspard Dore (c.1772)[9]
  9. Marie Louise Dore (c.1775) (m. Louis Pomier)[10]
  10. Marguerite Dore (c.1776)[11]

Marguerite Grabert was noted as deceased when her son Louis Dore married on 27 June 1796. [12]

Research Note

Marguerite Grabert is listed as 'Marguerite Christian'--reflecting her father's given name -- in many Louisiana records cited below; she also appears under the names 'Greber' in her marriage record; 'Creber' in her daughter Helen's marriage record; 'Crebe' in her daughter Catherine's marriage record; and she is 'Marie Crebre' in her son Philippe's marriage record. Her sister is also listed as 'Greber' in her own marriage record. The French national priests, and later the Spanish ones, had to communicate with various German, French, and Spanish dialects, as well as American and Irish English. Using a "foreign" person's father's given name as a dit name instead of their surname was not uncommon. Dit names are appropriately placed in WikiTree name data fields as "nicknames," "other last names," or "current last name," according to usage. In her case she is called "Marguerite" with "Christian" or "Christiana" as a last name-- which is why it is included with "other last names" data.
