Biography

John William Pickering was born on 28 January 1839 in Franklin Township, Union County, Arkansas. He was the eldest child of George Hiram Pickering and Harriett Elizabeth aka Eliza Lucus Pickering.

John W. enlisted in Company C 2nd Arkansas Battalion, Confederate States of America at El Dorado on 23 September 1861. [3]

John and his family were hit hard by the Civil War and Reconstruction both economically and personally as were most in the south, especially the subsistence farmers. John's brother did not make it home from the war and economically the family had lost much of their land holdings and/or the land still owned had little value.[4]

At 40 years of age John finally married and started his own life. On 17 July 1879 John married Cynthia Reynolds in Union County, Arkansas. [5]

John and Cynthia continued to farm, possibly some of the same acreage or certainly near by acreage. [6]

John's wife Cynthia died on 15 July 1888, but before her death she had born John five children during their nine years of marriage. [7]

On 26 May 1889 John married second S. A. (Susan Alabama) Hudson in Union county, Arkansas. [8]

As of the 1900 census, John continued to live and farm in El Dorado Township. With second wife Susan Alabama aka Bama the family continued to grow. [9]

As of the 1910 census sons William and Clarence had flown the nest but the remainder of the family was still living and farming the same land in El Dorado Township. John's family was designated family # 257. First cousin William Rub Pickering had moved into the neighborhood and was designated family # 255. [10]

As of the 1920 census only sons Charles now 29 years old and Dewey age 21 were still living on the farm with John and Bama, but Dewey had a wife and son. [11]
