Alexander Stuart, 5th Earl of Moray was Born in 1634 and he was baptised on 8 May 1634. He was the son of James Stuart (4th Earl of Moray) and his wife Lady Margaret Home. He succeeded to his lands & titles on 4 March 1653.

In 1654 he was fined £3,500 as a Royalist.

He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in February 1660/61.

He held the office of Lord Justice General [Scotland] in 1675/76.

He held the office of a Lord of Treasury in 1678. In 1678 he raised a regiment of Highlanders.

He held the office of Secretary of State in 1680.

He held the office of Extraordinary Lord of Session in 1680.

He held the office of Lord High Commissioner [Scotland] in 1686.

He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Thistle (K.T.) in 1687.

In 1688 he was deprived of his offices.

In 1690 he was imprisoned as a suspected Jacobite.

He died on 1 November 1700 at age 66.
