Only the second native Nevadan to become governor, the Virginia City native worked as a miner, a railroad conducter and owned a butcher store before serving as governor from 1927 to 1934. He was in the state assembly and senate as well as sheriff of Mineral County. During his term, he signed the state's open gambling law and six-week divorce law. He died while in office.
