Mathilda (Barbeau) Lussier migrated from Canada to USA.
Domitille Barbeau dite Boisdore
Domitille Barbeau dite Boisdore is her ancestral French dit name . It identifies or distinguishes something about the person or family. Boisdore was also spelled Bois Dor, or Bois Dore. This dit name was carried from France to Nouvelle France and French louisanne by her French Barbeau family. It refers to a master craftsman gold guilder or gold wood gilding. It remains a modern gold gilding definition. Dit Boisdore may have also referred to a French seigneury ( wood producing plantation) named Boisdore, Bois-Barbeau or Bois-Barbot in France. Eventually dit use was dropped as families became nationalized in North America and discontinued in France after the French Revolution. Baraboo-1 15:34, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
During the time Mathilda and Louis were married in French Canada , French Canadian women often kept their given name upon marriage and did not change their surname to their spouse's. Their children would carry the husband's given name. This would be beneficial to take in to account for research especially because they were married in French Canada and some of their children were born in French Canada. The 1851 Census lists her as Barbeau along with her husband (Lussier). When they later migrated to the United States she might have started using her husband's given name as is the custom during that time in the United States although the 1880 US census lists her as Barbeau. There are many later American documents where she is listed with her husband's last name.Baraboo-1 15:51, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
First name variants include: Mathila, Mathilde, Domitille
Research Note: In some family trees, Lucy Lussier born Feb 1842– is sometimes listed as a daughter. She is listed in the 1900 census as widowed and a line below Mathilda Lussier. She migrated in 1867, age 25 which is the same year that Mathilda Barbeau (Lussier) migrated. Given that Lucy may have married in French Canada and widowed there , she might not have changed her given name upon marriage which was the French Canadian custom at that time. The time frame of her birth and motivation to migrate in 1867 with her mom or mother in law is strong. .. pending further research .. The fact that the 1851 census does not list a Lucy age range 8-10 suggests that she may have been related by marriage.. A 1880 census lists several Lussier family members, [daughters. sisters] residing with Noe Lussier. Lucy is not listed. Maybe Lucy wasn't widowed yet and given that she was already in the United States by then she may have followed the English custom of changing her given surname to her husband's. pending further research . Confirmation source is needed. Baraboo-1 14:22, 25 December 2022 (UTC)

HI Lauren .. Noel ! .. Good Eye ! ... I'll research further, given that Lucy may have married in French Canada and widowed there , she might not have changed her given name upon marriage which was the French Canadian custom at that time. The time frame of her birth and motivation to migrate in 1867 with her mom or mother in law is strong. .. pending further research .. The fact that the 1851 census does not list a Lucy age range 8-10 suggests that she may have been related by marriage. The 1880 census lists numerous Lussier family members. [Daughters, sisters residing with Noe Lussier] Lucy is not listed. Maybe Lucy wasn't widowed yet and given that she was already in the United States by then she may have followed the English custom of changing her given surname to her husband's. C'est Bon Magnifique !
Yes - the Census takers at that time wouldve asked for her husband's last name and written it as her last name . I'll do some digging also. Happy Christmas!
