Biography

Samuel Carter, Sr. was born the third day of the 12th month of 1749, O.S. (see notes) a son of John Carter and Hannah Cope. On December 1, 1773, Samuel married Sarah Sidwell, a daughter of Henry Sidwell, of West Nottingham, Chester county, Pennsylvania. Children of Samuel and Sarah are:

1. Joel Carter, born September 15, 1774, died February 27, 1856
2. John Carter, born May 13, 1776, died August 30, 1779

Samuel married, secondly, on September 6, 1781, Ruth Taylor, daughter of Philip and Mary Taylor, of Thornbury, Chester county, Pennsylvania. Children of Samuel and Ruth are:

1. Abner Carter, born July 13, 1782, died November 19, 1802
2. Hannah Carter, born March 20, 1784, died July 31, 1850
3. Sarah Carter, born October 10, 1785
4. Samuel Carter, II, born July 16, 1787, died August 2, 1806
5. Rachel Carter, born May 12, 1789, died December 18,1 817
6. Jeremiah Carter, born July 30, 1791, died July 11, 1825, married Susan Moore on January 22, 1817
7. Ann Carter, born August 28, 1793
8. Cyrus Carter, born December 12, 1795
9. Amor Carter, born March 12, 1799

Samuel and his family resided for some time on Deer Creek, at Stafford Mill, in Harford county, Maryland, and afterward moved to Nottingham, Chester county, Pennsylvania, where he died February 29, 1836.
